The JVP called on the public to come forward and stand against the suppression of student rights by the government and protect the free education of the country.
Releasing a media statement the JVP alleged that the government was suppressing those with opposing views and that 28 students were already behind bars while more than 200 had their classes suspended in Universities island wide.
The JVP demanded that all students who were arrested be released immediately including the Convener of the Inter University Students Federation, Udul Premaratne who the JVP allege was educating the public and leaders, of the suppression that is taking place against students and the free education system. Well it stopped UNP from dividing the country inline with LTTE wish. That's why only UNP and LTTE blamed JVP at that time.

The only people suppressing student rights is the JVP. Remembering the 70's and 80's, never allow the JVP to misguide our students again. Sri Lanka would be a better place without you losers!

If JVP contes for next election we can see how is the public support. Any country there are problem and if there is no problem means that country and people are not moving so that every where will create different activities/.program /problems etc. There are problem in the uni's but those problem can not solved with violent and thuggery. People are criticizing those actions. I think JVP is no more with public now. Now people are not take any supporting action towards JVP.

Do you think poor parents can afford to pay the students fee of private universities?
1 3
Nandana Monday, 01 November 2010 02:24 AM
However we have a problem infront of us,
government is on its way to open the private universities. Most of the parties involved in supporting the struggle, including JVP are not
against private uni's as a policy, but what they are stressing is government do not have any policy to retain the university staff in government uni'
s. Neither the government, nor the pundits in forums like this do not address the core issue. Instead, wagging cheap sloggans against the students.

JVP's interpretation of 'Free Education' is totally different to what Dr.Kannangara proposed. JVP's interpretion includes ignoring classes and education, misguiding poor students, destroying their future and disrupting the public by holding demonstrations daily.

The JVP's been fooling the student movements for a long time...hopefully soon those days will be over and we'll have a new age student movement built up.
The country should selebrate the day the IUSF falls !

As a university academic, I applaud the firm stance taken by the government in arresting the student leaders responsible for the chaotic situation in the universities. We are all aware that this situation is the sole responsibiltity of a few misguided youths, fuelled by a political party. The majority of the undergraduates are not interested in political nitpicking but want to get on with their studies and graduate. At least now they will have the courage to speak out against the hardliners due to the stern but necessary actions taken by the government.
I am disgusted that Karu Jayasuriya and the UNP is trying to get political mileage out of this situation by siding with the alleged miscreants just to be anti government. Why cant the oppostion political parties acknowledge when constructive things happen for the good of the country, rather than foolishly oppose every action taken by the government ?

Yes! I too thought that Karu was a sensible person simply for the support he gave MR to suppress the LTTE even though he had to go against the UNP leadership. But alas this is a grave mistake to support the JVP student faction to instigate disorder in schools. Shame on you Karu!
