Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Monday condemned the Sri Lankan government for scrapping the Tamil version of its national anthem.
"If the reports in this regard are true, it is strongly condemnable. This will further dishearten Tamils (in Sri Lanka), who are already suffering. I condemn it," he said in a statement released in India.
Sri Lanka had scrapped the Tamil version of its national anthem at official and state functions after the cabinet decided at its last meeting, that the national anthem can only be rendered in the Sinhala language at official functions. (PTI)

There is only one National Anthem, and there should be no Tamil, English or any other versions. What had been done is correct.

Yes. Canada has national anthem in two languages, Switzerland has in four languages and south africa has in five languages, because of multi ethnic situation. Even Indian national anthem is not in Hindi, it is in Bengali which is another minority language in India and the national anthem was written by Ravindranath Thakoor, from west bengal. India did not change its national anthem in Hindi because it was the majority language.

Do the 62 million inTamilnadu get to sing the Indian National anthem in Tamil? In USA, the so called free world, 15.8% of the population is Hispanic (Spanish). Do the Spanish speaking people in USA get to sing the US national anthem in Spanish. Is Spanish the Second language in US because 15.8% is Hispanic. Why we cannot accept these two language national anthem. There are any countries that they have their national anthem in may languages.
Why suddenly GVT want to change? We are talking of one country of different nationals. Tamils are Srilankans and they should be able to sing it in their language.
We are going back where it started again.

The Indian national anthem in Bengali (a minority language in India) not in Hindi. One of the Sri Lankan ministers didnt know this.. so shame. there are many truly democratic nations such as Canada,Swiss, South Africa have multi language anthem.
Can Sri Lanka have Tamil only anthem like India has one in Bengali..???! If no.. then think yourself why not..??!

To argue about what other countries do is to miss the point. If we are to think of ourselves as “One Nation”, then we must also recognise that we have different faiths and languages. Tamil and Sinhala have been spoken in our island for many hundreds of years. It is dangerously wrong to deliberately exclude Tamil at a time when we are concentrating on re-building the nation. To force one group of people to sing the national anthem in a language that they do not understand is wrong. It sends a very potent signal to all minorities that their turn is next.

Most of the above commentators are Sinhalese and they commented in communal way. I think the tamils don't worry about this National song or what ever they called. Tamils are looking for their national Anthem not the Sinhalese national anthem. Definitely they will sing their own Tamil Eelam National Anthem very soon.

How can you equate an ethnic identity (SInahala) to a national identity? aren't we trying to be Sri lankan so why can't you be a Sinhalese and also be a Sri lankan whilst also being a Tamil and a Sri lankan.? If we don't have a national Anthem in both "official" languages then we are telling Tamils that to be Sri lankan= being Sinhalese.
