Nirupama’s husband denies reports of attack



United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) parliamentarian Nirupama Rajapaksa’s husband Thirukumaran Nadesan today denied media reports which said he was attacked by a group of activists today at Rameswaram.

He said a pro-LTTE group led by a person called ‘Seaman’ launched a demonstration during a visit to the Rameswaram Temple.

Meanwhile the Hindu Online reported that Mr. Nadesan was attacked today in Rameswaram by a group of activists.

It said the activists belonging to the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and Nam Tamilar Iyakkam (NTI) are said to have heard about his arrival and surrounded a house at Nadutheru, where he was performing a pooja, and shouted slogans against Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The policemen, who were posted to provide security to him, intervened and removed the agitators from the scene.

Although it was not known immediately about the nature of his injuries, he was known to have been dealt heavy blows by the agitators.

The policemen hurriedly escorted him to a hotel from the house and later had vacated the hotel under heavy security.

Nirupama Rajapaksa is the niece of Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa. (Source: The Hindu)
