thailand and even holland suffer from human trafficking. soon sri lankan girls will be kidnapped from villages with the promis of employment and then be trapped in a brothel.
this idea is not that of the ministers. early part of this year one of the brothers proposed it along with the Casino city in the colombo harbour area. this ministers comment is just to prepare the public mindset for what has been decided ling while ago.
what we are now saying is that Sri Lankan tourist attraction is not working enough so we are throwing in prostitution to attract them.
along with this trade will come the child sex and rape sex. these will be hidden behind the legalized brothels.
The social cost of this decision is going to be very high.

Haha anyway, i do not think economic growth is a reason to legalise prostitution. It is somethign that must be doscouraged and not encouraged. However, from the perspective that it is the oldest profession, women do it anyway and as a result they do not gte protection under the law for crimes commited against them when offering their services, i think it should be legalised but NOT promoted or encouraged

The comments on this thread are worrying and testimony to the fact that we are breeding a community of sex-deprived beings. The fact that this was suggested as a means to promote tourism is both embarassing and representative of the irrational character of most government-led development projects in current times. Surely, Sri Lankan tourism should be promoted along other lines? To suggest that such a physically and culturally beautiful nation must resort to such measures is idiotic. Improve infrastructure throughout the country, think of innovative ways to promote tourism and expand on existing methods (eco-tourism etc) and improve transport facilities to increase accessibility throughout the country and then we can truly say there are no other options.

Countries in which prostitution is legalised, are there any curse or God has punished them or are there natural disasters? U cannot predict those.

If Tourisim is a necessity to boost economy the proposal sounds reasonable to avoid locals getting involved in these activities and bring disharmony to society at large

Legalizing prostitution will make things worse for pimps and hoes as far as working people go. I would hate to see that on every corner and it being ok. no way!!!!!!!!

whether prostitution is illegal or not it is happening in Sri Lanka. whether you like it or not, its happening in large scale. because it is a social need. By legalizing, it can be regulated and controlled, for example the transmission of STD's can be reduced. Even though you might not know the health authorities of STD control are closely liasing with Brothels and Commercial sex workers & they've shown good results. So, before jumping into conclusions with your own perimetery, it is better to analyse the facts.

Money is not everything. If you compromise moral values for petty gains country will have to face repercussions. This is one sided, have a public dialog and then analyze.

I think it is not prostitution that needs to be legalized. It is homo sexuality that needs to be legalized bcz some tourists come to Sri Lanka, just for that.

1. Alcohol is legal in SL. Still we have Kasippu. So how can we say prostitution will be totally monitored and standardized? We know how it works in this country so let's think logically please.
2. In countries like thai where prostitution is legal, young girls from rural areas are forced into this by addicting them to drugs. So wont that happen here where kidnappings happen often and underworld operate freely?
Why do we need tourists who come here for prostitutes anyway?
