Charging that the government is planning to hold the next local government election under the old PR system though the Local Government Electoral Reforms Bill is to be presented and passed on January 4, the UNP today challenged the government to have the poll under the new system.
UNP Kurunegala District MP Dayasiri Jayasekera told a news conference that the government had become reluctant to go for the local poll under the present situation as there are several challenging issues such as a the sky rocketing cost of living.
Besides,Mr. Jayasekera explained that many SLFPers in the local government bodies are frustrated with the proposed electoral reforms and are watchful of the developments in the UNP. He said the UNP would be able to win this election if the proposed party reforms are implemented.
The UNP MP said the party reforms would be implemented within 120 days as planned earlier peacefully. He said the UNP is currently equipped with a sound constitution where it would be possible to go for a vote to select the senior leaders if it is necessary. (Yohan Perera)
