An alleged leader of the LTTE movement Muttusamy Illangovan alias Samy who was arrested by the Modera police from a lodge in Kathirasen Street is being tried before the Colombo Magistrate Court on a charge of staying in Sri Lanka without visa
The police investigations conducted on the accused had revealed that the accused is a Singapore national and an owner of a large fleet of merchant ships. His ships are in service in over 70 countries. Two of his ships have been served in the Sri Lankan seas and one of them had been taken into custody by the LTTE sea cadres.
Thereafter Illangovan had come to Sri Lanka to negotiate with the LTTE hierarchy in order to get his ship released.
Accordingly he had gone to Jaffna and met the LTTE leader Velupillai Prabakanran. He had stayed with the LTTE hierarchy for some time in Jaffna and also had posed for photographs with them.
The Attorney General freed Muttusamy Illangovan from all charges alleged against him under the Emergency Regulations and under the Prevention of Terrorist Act.
Attorney General filed indictment in court against Muttusamy Illangovan for violating the Immigration and Emigration Regulations.
