Sri Lanka's charismatic pace- bowler Lasith Malinga announced his retirement from Test cricket on Friday stating that he wished to prolong his international career.
The unorthodox pacer also clarified that he is available for selection for all Sri Lanka's ODI and T20 matches.
The announcement came after the pacer was accused of choosing the cash-awash Indian Premier League over national duties. The Mumbai Indian pacer is the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing IPL 4.
Malinga said in a statement released to media that his physical health is fine, but his 'degenerative knee problem' needs to be managed carefully.
Maliga said that he has been advised by the national team physiotherapist and orthopaedic consultant that his condition will deteriorate when fielding or bowling for prolonged periods. (timesofindia)

dear lisa.......any fool will understand that this player malinga is behind IPL money and has betrayed our motherland. next step he will be a freelance cricketer and not sign a contract with the cricket board. SLC must kick him out of all forms of cricket aswe have enough young cricketers who loves our country.

Dear Malinga,
Yes we know that you are not in a good physical position to play test cricket. But is it the right time to announce your retirement. Because we get the impression that you are making a reason to not to come back sri lanka.

Sad to note Malinga chose the SF's path.

Maliya - Your suggestion is right had the players choose to play elsewhere ignoring the national duties. SL Cricket board has been involved in signing the contract and fixing the dates. I hate IPL but ones singed you must honour the contract. You cannot breach the contract due to political involvement or for revenge. Playing IPL also kind of practice.

Typical Sri Lankan with short memory. Malinga told the media about his retirement from Test cricket due to injured knee before the WC2011. He may not have officially told to the SLC.
Now as a country we reverse the original decision because of a verbal decision of a minister.
He did his best for the country. Who does not need the money to live.
Please do not throw stones with out checking the full facts.

Are the "patriots" samurdhi beneficiaries or are they stealing money from some where? Malinga has to live - so let him earn it the honest way, unlike politicians and bureaucrats who rob us in broad day light.

People like you have short memory! have you forgotten what he has already done for the Sri Lankan Cricket. You of all people are ungrateful to him. If it were you, what you would have done? Do you want to prolong your career or destroy it. Malinga retired knowing if he played he will short career for him will have to retire early from all from of cricket.

Malinga everybody will make various comments, first and foremost thing is to look after your HEALTH. When you are older you will have to be in good health to enjoy life. What is the use of fame and riches if your health is not sound.Health is wealth they say.You have made a very wise decision. You have been great and a unique cricketer. And all the cricket fans all over the world will remember you for the unique bowling action you have.Look after your health now. I wish you all the very best.

why blame malinga? Hundreds of Doctors engineers etc who learned their trade in govt universities at the expense of the poor man did and are doing the same. They migrate to Aus/UK etc for a better salary. maybe some of these 'patriot's who have commented here are also living abroad plying their trade that they learnt here.

IPL is the cause for all these destruction. Its not only Malinga we may loose so many talented players because of IPL . The game is played for 2 months and If Malinga is going to play the whole tournament it will also stress his knee injury. Where is the logic ??

Those of you who are critical of Malinga, let us know, 1) If you are a Sri Lankan living and or working overseas and 2) If you are in Sri Lanka, and are working for the private sector?
If you said yes to any of the above two questions, what motivated you? Service to country or money? Stop being hypocritical of this young man and let him decide like you decided.

We know it is coming. Our selectors made him make this decision earlier than expected. We know how much he was struggling after that Galle Test. It is a very correct decision. Best of Luck to him to continue his career in other formats.

This is what IPL does to other countries. players put the money before the country. it was the sri Lankans who backed Malinga through out his short carrier. and this is how he repays the country. i don't know who we should blame other than ourselves.

Good decision. Being patriotic (for a cricketer) doesnt mean you should risk your career. They dont play till they are 60. Given Malinga`s knee problem, he can prolong his career by giving up test cricket.

We dont want anothar Sohib Akthar, the current work load a player have to face in the international calander and only match winner in SL balling team after murali retaier it is the correct decesion, there is a different balling four overs per match or 15 -20 per day.
Wish you all the best Malli
