The meeting between Minister Basil Rajapaksa and the Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) was successfully concluded this evening, the FUTA said.
President of the association Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri told Daily Mirror online that they will ‘most probably’ take a decision about their current trade union action after the scheduled meeting with Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B.Jayasundare on Monday. (Lakna Paranamanna)

What a bunch of idiots are these so-called FUTA? After depriving the education for more than three months for their own children asking for exact measure pound of flesh, now going back. See the damage done to this generation and generations yet to be born. Did they ever think that they also got the free education to dissiminate eduction.among the downtrodden politeriat class in a developing third world country, just trying to stand its own feet after 30 years of bloody war?

Why your children need to study if uneducated political people earn by bribery more than these professors, doctors, engineers and exct…
In Sri Lanka you can qualify by learning corruptions alone!

One thing is for sure that, PB is not willing to give away anything. If he gives them any salary increase, then other sectors will join the trend to ask to match the differences...
It is better to give them a salary increase, parallel to their achievements. Otherwise we can not put a single University into top 100 category..

Honestly speaking, I've no idea how Basil is negotiating with interlectuals or vice versa. The entire education system should be streamlined. Appoint any plonker as the Minister but the secretaries, advisers, top officials must be well qualified. Allocationg 6% is a good thing but it should be manage so well. I dont think the student or average public has any idea how much that is.
PB..? Oh dear...Back to square one.

Do not talk of problems of only your children's 3 months studies. If the problem is not solved properly you will loose studies of decades of future children.

Yes in Japan who conclude it is above 3%, at the same time you say nobody can figure out the exact number of GDP, contradictions..BTW here we spent less that 2% on education, we have very talented fellows, but can we do our research to make use of it?no funds..end of the day it is my child and yours that is is going to suffer, unless you sent them to private school..

The "Kal maerimae " government policy has worked here...
Holding the fort till they give in and open the gates...
Everybody is loosing..
If any increase of funds to UNI , it would be a future investment..
Due to lack of resources though AL passed uni entrance is limited. Another poont is SL can earn money when people learn in SL work abroad and send back money..
Can't see much change happening now...

From most comeents we see a lack of faith in professors, and there facade exposed. We are not blind reg corruption , lawlessness etc etc. But the point of discusssion is these Professors wasted 3months of our children studies and exams, blackmailed by refusing to mark AL papers, and and tried to hoodwink the civic society by 6%. Finally all about money and holding a candle to their marxist stooges.
Even now it not too late to bring your profession to the rspect it commanded from the society. or like to parade on streets join Prof GL, Dr Sarath A, Dr Mervin, Dr Bahu, Or BR TIN TIN Silva or Uncle Soma wansa abd do politics and True Professori teach our children .

May saner counsel prevail, looking forward to enter the Univ. premises with all eagerness to meet our teachers. If a Nation fails to honor and understand the teachers and fail to feel the pulse, the Nation loses it's honor and dignity itself.

You nutty professor you wanted teach people 6% at the cost of our childrens 3 months of studies. your are rubbish like all other unions though you call yourselves professors. Pettah natami will sacrifice something for sake of his country. As professors calculate the damage and the cost of trying to teach 6% to public when you should teaching our future genaration. Hats of Your Excellency for not meeting the nutty professors after they say they are educated. country has gone to the dogs

Minister Basil"s decision to negotiate with FUTA is a timely action to respond positively thinking about the future of the young generation. Government ought to allocate more fund for the education:the life-blood of a country. It would be ideal if Basil becomes the Minister of Education rather than SB and SB is good for Municipal Council not for education. Things will move smoothly if VCs of Universities( Henchmen of SB) are replaced with the deserving Academics. Unless otherwise, the rot in universities will continue and soon meet their destiny. Do We need to see that?

You idiots did not know the meaning of 6% of the GDP request or the definition of it. UNESCO or anybody cannot give a universal single figure for education expenditure for all countries because the development is at different levels. The salaries paid to academics are already too high for arts, science, and similar faculties. Do you know that Japan, a prosperous country the direct government education expenditure is a little over 3%. In Sri Lanka education is funded by many resources. Without doing a proper research (YOU ARE (WRONGLY) ACCALIMED TO BE RESEARCH ORIENETED) you have gone on this demand, and you have wasted 3 months of students’ lives, public money and national wealth. In the education history of SL they will never forgive you for this crime. You are a disgrace to Hon. CWW Kannagara who set up the free education in SL. Your total education was funded by our poor people and now you have taken their AL children to Ransom. Disgrace! Disgrace! Disgrace!!!

Then Doctors will strike saying increase GDP % for HEALTH when they need a salary rise..

So, these are well-organized 'struggles' !!!!! Ane pau Ranji oya !! If Foolish UTA is so genuine, ask them to (you can lead) publish the real agreement between the Govt and them. Then people like you will know more.

Without any single publications in international indexed journals, professor salary and title used by more than 94% of Sri Lankan Professors. Sri Lanka has the lowest qualified Professors in terms of any international professor indicators. Even in Sudan, Ethiopia and PNG need 15 international high end indexed journal articles to consider as professor. But in Sri Lankan profs do not know what in high end indexed…etc. Therefore they deserve very less salary

Doctors total package is anyway much better and higher than university teachers. Through the 3 months long much sacrificed struggle of FUTA, all who did not understand why government should not cut down funds allocated to state education, will learn the bitter lesson by themselves within next 5 to 10 years. At least FUTA has tried its best teach this to the nation

izaawa Sunday, 07 October 2012 12:45 AM
It is very unfortunate that many people are very selfish. After coming up through the free education, now you think that it is a obstacle for the economic development of the country. Biggest obstacle for the economic development is the corruption (which is more than the money spent on education by the entire nation). See examples of developed countries with free education.

Free Thinker Sunday, 07 October 2012 12:40 AM
Oh... and you are going to teach the university students? Even if the only outcome of this trade union action is them getting a higher salary its worth it. I am telling this because at the moment as a 'just passes out' student from the Engineering Faculty of Moratuwa, I'm getting a higher salary than my teachers back at the uni. People who go for PhD's wont return to this county if they cant live a comfortable life (compared their students!)
