The Democratic People’s Front (DPF) today said Public Relations Minister Mervyn Silva was causing unwanted tension in Chilaw with his announcement to hold a Sathyagraha against animal sacrifices in a Hindu Temple in Munneswaram.
“The Minister’s notice has already created tension in the aarea. I call upon Mervyn not interfere in this matter and leave the issue to the Hindu organizations in the country, the ministry of religious affairs and to the court of law,” DPF Leader Mano Genesan said in a statement.
He also said his party did not approve animal sacrifices which was also the general opinion of the Hindu Tamil community in this country. But Mr. Ganesan said there were certain sects who continued with these rituals in the Munneswaram temple. He said this had to be brought to an end with the support of Hindu organizations and the ministry of religious affairs. “Minister Mervyn Silva should not dramatize this matter by interfering in this sensitive issue. It would create conditions not conducive to the religious harmony that exists between Hindus and Buddhists in Munneswaram,” Mr. Ganesan’s statement said. (Yohan Perera)

Crearting unrest among communities is admirable?
He himself is a carnivore (and many others).
If he loves what he is doing he should find legal ways not taking law in his hands. By the way how about Veddhos hunting and domesticating wild elepahants in curel means in the name of rituals.
This mad fellow is a nutcase.

You epitomise the era we are in, which is medieval times. It is not the extinction of animals but animal cruelty we talk about here. It won't happen overnight but with small steps like this what the minister is doing, we might do giant leaps by stopping killing altogether at some point. Wherever there is some effort to stop animal killing, it must be admired.

What are the so called animals? They are goats and chicken. and are not considerd pets. These animals are anyway there for human consumption so what's the harm. In the same note Minister M should then take up cudgels with the bigh super market chains as they also sell all kinds of poultry and meat and slaughtered under appaling conditions.

My point exactly Nodrog! This is a peaceful attempt to stop barbarism (committed on mythical grounds even). If somebody else wants to do it in a different way, they should try that without blocking this effort as well but this time, this minister's attempt is praiseworthy!

I do agree animal sacrifice is wrong. But then what were sinhalese buddhists doing in 1956, 1977 and 1983 riots? These were not done by sinhalese pusari's nor was it done by trained sinhalese butchers...but by ordinary sinhalese neighbours and so called good buddhist citizens...and the carnage was not for few hours but for days and weeks.

well said Rubert Vanderkoon. Most of these guys have jumped on to the band-wagon not seeing the actual picture. They dont realize that since animal killing cannot be stopped the next best this is to see they are killed as humanely as possible and not in the crude outdated manner practiced here today.

I wanted to point out that killing of a life is not accepted in Hinduism. It is completely against the religion. The people who are associated with this kind of slaughter are mostly attracted by Black magic than proper Hinduism. But why this Merwin Silva is against it is not because he loves the animals. He wanted to get some support from majority Sinhalese by doing this type of act .

Why cant he work with his fellow colleagues like from Ministry of Religious Affairs, and also work on regulations... the problem is , he is creating a drama and sensitizing the issue further....Work with them to solve the problem...

People concerned about slaughtering innocent animals to scarify. What about tens of thousands of the same being slaughtered -both legally and illegally - for human consumption in this country, daily? Had this sudden 'saint' closed all the chicken, mutton, pork, beef stalls in his electorate? Well, does he expect our adivaasi community to become 'vegetarians'? These moves cannot be accounted for sensible campaigns, but egoism fueled by sheer political motives and/or ethnocentrism. In a plural society we should be able to tolerate these things. But you can spiritually oppose it, like many others. If it is not something acceptable in your religious thought and let them bring the deserved suffering with them for all violence they commit! Thats Buddhism, not to abuse noble Buddhism for your political motives.

So much fuss about killing animals, when they are done all over for human consumption. Mervyn and others should concentrate on stopping killing of human beings, child abuse, rape and drug peddling which are really very great crimes, which certainly will be appreciated by all law abiding people.

I believe people should change their ways of practicing their religions depending on the society they live in. specially the minorities.
In SL killing animals is a very sensitive topic. even muslim leaders should try to be more lenient with laws such as asking women to cover everything up etc.
I don't think Gods up their would mind such changes.
