The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) today stressed that there was no necessity to allow male nurses in labor rooms as female patients felt uncomfortable and that the patients should have the ability to choose whether or not to allow male nurses.
The GMOA added that 95% of the nursing staff in Sri Lanka was female and that whether male nurses should attend female patients is questionable and should be left for the patients to decide.
Nurses in Kurunagala held a protest recently calling the authorities to allow male nurses into labor rooms. A protest against these unreasonable demands will me organized by the doctors and minor staff of the Kurunagala hospital, the GMOA officials said. (Daily Mirror online)

Why all of a sudden such a demand now ? is it ithe work ofy the JVP ?
How was the practice before ?
Since there was no big ha ho over this situation in the past let it continue as it is.
And also what role are these male nurses demand in the labor rooms ?

Don't confuse the issues. This is about patient's dignity. Just because in Sri Lanka patients are not given any rights, there is no need to perpetuate the gross indignity, particularly pregnant mothers suffer in SL state hospital wards.

This is a matter to be decided by the Authorities depends on the needs and NOT adhering to any PROTESTS or DEMANDS of DOCTORS or NURSES. Our Country has become a country of Protectests because of the So Called Trade Unions which are actually politically motivated hooligans.

If there are no female nurses then the male nurses can assist.
What we have to think about here is the mentality of the person giving birth rather than talking about rights. If the patient is uncomfortable with a man around her when she is giving birth what is the point of having a male nurse...
Is it to prove equality?

Shouldn't this also apply to all theatre staff including the Gynecologists?
In my opinion, the decision should rest with the patient, not the GMOA.

Everyone know Nurses are Nurses...
Also Male is Male and Female is Female
For the sake of being a Nurse a MALE (Nurse) should not enter the Lady's area...
You'll be amazed of the Health Facility provided in arab countries. Strictly mens are not allowed to enter Ladies section and there are enough and more Female Nurses to treat female patients...

The present world is such that men rape even dead women, therefore male nurses should be BANNED from entering labour rooms or female wards.

No, male doctors do not do deliveries or attend female patients on thier own, if they do so, it is highly unethical. therefore it is mandatory to have a female chaperon or female nurse around
this is the standard practice .world over. my question is that is male nurses are going to assist female nurses or midwifes in deliveries?
we have a dire need of male nurses to work in other deciplines like psychiatry. Majority,98% of the care of men were look after by female nurses under great stress. what are the nurses think about that(male nurses and nurses unions)?

Don't these nurses have any other important thing to demand? I think male nurses should not be in labor room, because of our culture and there is no advantage from employing a male nurse there than employing a female nurses. Female nurses are better to handle delivering babies than male nurses. I can't imagine what is the real purpose behind this demand.

In Taliban ruled Afghanistan, women were allowed to die during child birth rather than allow a male doctor to delivery the baby. Is the GMOA getting inspired by Taliban now.

A human's right shoud be considered i/respected in this matter, just like in the West. So, the patient should be given the right to decide!

A doctor is a doctor, male or female. So is a nurse. They are trained to do a job, we should respect that.

Yes, if the Gynocolgyists have a 95 % femalre ratio.
When you are becoming a nurse you do not specialize. But when you are becoming a doctor you become specialized.
But I believe, the patient should decide whether she needs male or femail or Email doctor / Nurse in side the labour room

Male nurses in labour rooms must be prohibited, unless the patient and the spouse give consent. Most asian Countries are not use to this as there is a major cultural difference compared to the west.
The patient must have the right to choose.

Nurses are Nurses. There isnt a profession called male nursing. They have the right and training work equally in any place. Apart from that this is not a country which governed by thalibanian model of rules and regulations.

Yes, this is a good move. Many male nurses indulge in various things like molesting with female weak patients who can not react to them like they do when they are healthy. Those patients mostly keep quiet because they are ill.

it is better to ask from the patient before she it taken into the labor room, wheather to allow a malenurse inside the room or not? that will be the best option.....

I hope government will take stern action against these inappropriate demands.

Paykie Saturday, 16 October 2010 10:52 PM
what's wrong with having male nurses in the labor rooms?? seriously?? what can they do? As long as they are trained, qualified and legally allowed to practice, males nurses or doctors should not be denied the opportunity to help female patients. If a female patient objects to have a male nurse, that's a different story but denying male nurses the privilege to work in such a setting is gender discrimination.
