Minister tells police to arrest his brother

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said it was he who had instructed the Polonnaruwa Police to arrest and produce his brother Priyantha Sirisena alias Raju in courts on charges of having damaged the Polonnaruwa Wildlife Department office and assaulting an employee.

“I do not condone thuggery and during my 25 years as an MP, a minister, leader of the House and SLFP General Secretary, I have never abused my power or engaged in any unlawful act. Therefore, I cannot accept any such act even if it was committed by my brother,” the minister said.

He told the media at the Information and Media Ministry office that as soon as he received the information about the alleged assault he summoned the Polonnaruwa Police and Wildlife office employees and inquired what had happened.

“I do not know the details. But I told the police that if they want to serve in Polonnaruwa they must arrest and produce the suspect before releasing him on bail,” the minister said.
He said he would never let anyone hide behind his ministerial power and break the law as he has been elected by the people in Polonnaruwa and his one and only priority was to serve them. I do not condone thuggery and during my 25 years as an MP, a minister, leader of the House and SLFP General Secretary, I have never abused my power or engaged in any unlawful act. (SAJ)
