Monitoring any possible radiation

A team of scientists from the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Authority visited the Galle and Matara Districts today to monitor the affects of radiation leaks, if any, caused by the explosions in the nuclear plants in Japan.

They will focus particular attention on the possibility of any adverse effects to Sri Lanka that could have arrived with the south western monsoon winds.

However, the Atomic Energy Authority ha earlier said that the radiation leak in the nuclear plant in Japan would not affect Sri Lanka and that the public should no fears in that regard. They said that Cesium 137 radiation, that does not have any smell or colour, could affect the environment even after 30 years.

Senior Scientist of the Authority, Prasad Mahakumara, said that they would monitor the situation regularly to check any possible radioactivity in the area. The team was scheduled to visit Peradeniya and Anuradhapura today (17) and Trincomalee and Colombo tomorrow (18). (Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk)
