Carlton Sports Network (CSN), a dedicated sports channel operated by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s sons, is among the companies to be levied under the Super Gain Tax introduced by the Government, Parliament was informed today.
Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, who opened the debate on the interim budget, said this tax was introduced to charge a levy from some companies that prospered disproportionately during the tenure of the previous government while making a minimum contribution to the economy.
He cited CSN as an example and said it had neither paid the spectrum tax nor the electricity charges.
"CSN has usurped the sports telecasting rights of the state-run television channels and misappropriated the fleet of vehicles assigned to the Presidential Security Division (PSD) for its business operations. That is how it has made huge profits," the minister said adding that one-fourth of the income accrued by these companies will be charged as tax if they had made a profit of Rs.2,000 million or more during the financial year 2013/2014. Many have been allegations made by this 100-day 20-twenty government which have fallen flat. So statements like this need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

There are many and many accusations, on many and many people and organisations. Where are the facts and details?. Just accusing in not enough. There is the Super profit tax brought in to tax illgotton profits. That means that National Savings Bakl, LOLC, Bank of Ceylon, National Insuaance Corporation, LOLC, and a whole lot of other Banks and coporate bodies mate profits the wrong If so the government in the name of good governaent should take legal action, more so now there in a CJ appointed by this government..

Takeover is should be a place where all "Yahapaalanaya" should not tread. Appropriate taxes/penalties are one thing. Takeovers impinge on the peoples rights to do things; not a good place to be.

This comment is not relevant to CSN. But I still cant understand why some people think it is ok for MR to make money in the name of the war/peace and development. I saw on a comment, somebody comparing Lee Kuan Yew. Yes, he is rich but this person has no idea how he made his country rich. If i am not mistaken GDP per capita 55,000 USD , GDP 298 Bn USD for 5.4mn population. I know we had for 30 years but did MR or anyone for that sake had a clear vision for this country like LKY had for SG. We talk about change, are we as a community, society or country ready to change, Are we ready to change how we eat, drink, sleep especially work or any for the betterment of the future. My answer is No. If any one has a chance to talk to a 1st generation modern Singaporean they will say the sacrifices they made to build the country. I think time has come to challenge the politicians.

There must be a thorough and very public investigation as to how the children of the ex-President who himself was a man of very meager means when he got elected or even upto the time the LTTE was defeated, amassed such enormous wealth in such a short time. The rise of the Rajapakse clan from there was meteoric and obviously,as we are now gradually finding out,the spoils of mass scale looting of looting the resources of the country. How could this young man with hardly any known means or income or family wealth come to own such a large proportion of this mega asset. The government must give serious consideration to nationalizing this asset and selling it to the public if there is evidence it was acquired through misappropriation of public assets,or abuse of position and mass tax evasion. In addition criminal prosecutions must follow and if found guilty these people must be punished twice as severely as other ordinary criminals and given extremely long jail terms and still worse stripped of civic rights for a period of at least 20 years to prevent corruption of the Sri Lankan political environment. This family has been up to every conceivable vice known to human kind. Everyday the news brings news of their crimes that we find it hard to keep track of them. The worst part is that they were committed so brazenly without any regard to public opinion and still worse that the whole of Sri Lanka was their grandmothers dowry.

The best way to trace vehicles (be they presidents office vehicles or any state vehicles) is to check with the Registrar of Motor vehicles. They have a computerized vehicle particulars complete with owners details. Did we loose our marbles somewhere?

What lot of people ignore is the fact that CSN deprived the state media institutions like Rupavahini and Eye channel from earning income by telecasting cricket matches and this was unfair to say the least.

As far as I know csn used all the facilities from ITN even the frequency was former prime TV frequency. Do they have there own broadcasting stations or still they use ITN resource. Do they pay a rent for it?Where are the towers? I got to know in pidurutalagala mountain they have a tower build where only towers were allowed for three forces and police. State TV only.I think have to see these matters more deeplyNirosha

Having made so much profit in 2013/2014, the staff is not paid properly but utilised to the maximum. This year too they were not given an increment and their bonus is so little that a young girl working there cannot buy a dress for that amount. Their salaries are so low that peons in the state sector earn more than an executive at CSN. Take over CSN and help the staff utilise their education and experience in the proper manner.

CSN transmission was free on ITN TV towers. Any other broadcaster has to spend money on putting up towers around the country and maintaining them. For CSN this was free from ITN.Also they got huge advertising from state companies like SLT (telecom); insurance etcAll ill gotten money

Dr HondaHitha Friday, 06 February 2015 09:25 AM
As far as my knowledge concern,SLN(Sri Lanka Navy) has being very generous on CSN and let CSN to operate on Navy tower @ piduruthalagala.Further it could be a possibility that CSN may using Naval transmiters ,r infrastructure as well as technical support for their own good.It is worthy to carry out proper inquiry to identify high handed or shameless acts of Navy hierarchy.
