The Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) said that they will be staging protests in front of all the universities countrywide on October 19, 20 and 21 in objection to the arrest of the 21 students at the Higher Education ministry last Thursday.
The students were arrested during a clash between the Police and the IUSF who had forcibly entered the Higher Education ministry premises in Town Hall after breaking its gates. Some 20 persons, including 12 policemen and eight students, were hospitalized following the clash. (Daily Mirror online)

You are correct. If students want to study, they should work and pay. Then they will know value of the money that they are wasting every day.

As JayDee says - closing universities is not the option. What about the students who genuinely want to study. These violent students also intimidate the peaceful students who are keen on graduating as fast as possible. These violent and every-protesting students should be identified, and suspended and an inquiry held, and if guilty, should be banned from further education. After all, education is free and they have no right to protest. It is the grassroots students who come from poor families who are indulging in the acts of violence - the majority Sinhala Baudha, gamey kollas and kellas! This is why the elitist students now opt not to enter unis and either find employment after ALs.

They break into the ministry, damage public property and still insist that they are the 'victims'. These so called representatives are a hindrance and a disgrace to the actual university students who are there to study.

HAVE YOU HEARD OF ANY OTHER COUNTRY WHERE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS FIGHT LIKE THIS ALL THROUGH THE YEAR, IRRESPECTIVE OF THEIR GRIEVANCES? SRI LANKAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ARE AN UNFORTUNATE LOT WHO SPEND A GREAT DEAL OF THEIR PRECIOUS TIME IN PROTESTS AND FIGHTING, AND NOT STUDYING; NO WONDER MOST OF OUR GRADUATES ARE VERY POOR IN COMMUNICATION WHICH MAKES THEM LESS EMPLOYABLE. WHILE OTHER ASIAN COUNTRIES ARE SURGING AHEAD IN ALL SCALES, WE ARE SLIDING DOWNHILL. MY COUNTRY, I WEEP FOR THEE!

Really- The Govt. should take very strong disciplinary action against these student "hooligans" and expell them from the universities. these hooligans are depriving the chance for thousands of genuine students who are eligible to enter universities.

email (TELL IGP) first and get his feedback. This time make a peaceful protest. The problem with (IUSF) they forget the whole idea of what they protest for.
And also change the name from (IUSF) to (IUS - Inter Uni Student). Anything ending with SF isn't a good ormen nowadays. :D

It is better to privatized all the universities. Free education is enough now. Even it is better to do the same for the schools
6 23
JayDee Saturday, 16 October 2010 10:41 AM
Closing down all universities is not an option. What will happen to the future of professional education of the country then? However such nonsense should not be tolerated. It is a minority that is creating all this trouble. They should be identified and suspended and should never be given a second chance. There isn't that much of trouble at the Moratuwa uni since strict disciplinary action is taken most of the time. Standard of O/L and A/L exams should be improved. Number of intakes for the degrees with less job market should be decreased (eg: Arts degree, Ayurrveda etc.). Sinhala medium degrees should be discontinued. Such action will help reduce all these riots, pickets, etc.
