The Treasury has amended the circular relating to vehicle imports, enabling more MPs to import vehicles for their personal use under duty concessions, government sources said today.
The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs had issued permits to only 69 members before the circular was amended. There have been numerous requests from MPs to amend this circular.
An MP can purchase a vehicle up to US$ 50,000 under this facility from the international market by paying only 18 per cent of the import duties. The Bank of Ceylon provides a loan of Rs.5,0 00,000 to each member for this purpose.
The government has amended this circular so that MPs can import vehicles before prices soar further in Japan due to the appreciation of the Yen. (KB)

Nope.
Increasing the salaries is not a priority at the moment. We now require more benefits to the MPs to increase their efficiency and motivate them to perform well on the various projects launched to develop the country.

So this is how the Chinthanaya is looking after the MP's. The State grumbles when it has to consider salary increases but goes ahead pampering the ministers in this way.
