An attempt at the European Parliament to seek the immediate establishment of an International Justice Mechanism on Sri Lanka has failed today, the Sri Lanka Embassy in Brussels said.
During an ‘emergency’ debate called by the Socialist and Green parties at the Strassbourg Plenary session to draw attention to the ‘UN Panel Report’ on accountability issues in Sri Lanka, the EU Parliament was adopted an amended resolution, calling for the Sri Lankan Government to act according to the panel report.
The Belarus regime's harassment of journalists and opposition leaders, the plight of human rights activists in Azerbaijan and the fate of Tamil citizens in Sri Lanka were the three topics selected for urgent debates and resolutions by the European Parliament on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the EU Parliament in a statement said that ‘two years after the civil war in Sri Lanka ended with the surrender of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Parliament urges the Sri Lankan government to take active measures to protect the Tamil people so that they can look forward to "a bright and prosperous future, on equal terms with their Sinhalese fellow citizens".
“Following a recently published UN report, which finds credible, the allegations that both government forces and the LTTE conducted military operations with "flagrant" violations of human rights, MEPs call for a full, impartial and transparent investigation. The EP urges the Sri Lankan government to implement the recommendations suggested by the UN panel of experts and conduct a genuine investigation.”

I think the Tamils are doing very well otherwise how can they have so much money to pay human smugglers thousands of dollare to get away from Paradise. What the world community should do is to charge and convict the Tamilan Diaspora for aiding abetting a terrorist organization to kill innocent Sri lankans. Start with the idiotic leader of Tamil Global Forum.

I don't think the guys at the Belgium mission understood the issue discussed.
The justice mechanism can only be established either by the Sri Lankan state or by the UN.
EC can only make a request on this regards and what they did was that. In this, I am at a lost to understand EC fails in what?
When are we going to have the career diplomats in important stations overseas?

If we have nothing to hide in terms of HR violations and if the government as it said has only carried out a humanitarian operation where by taking much care not to violate international HR laws then as a member state of the UN we should carry out the request of the UN panel. Its good for the country and its image which is now being tarnished at the international level all because of a few leaders of this island nation who feel if they give cooperate with the UN that would mean they are weak. Leaders if you have nothing to hide about this then the SL public is with you all the way and every citizen (Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslim and others) will support you with no party politics at play because this matter is a national issue and not selected to one party of person/s.

yes, whether u like it or not. that race concept is there. but that doesn't mean that all Jaffna high race (though there are 50+ casts available) ppl were supporting terrorism. if you have such mind set, change it at least now.

Kapila Friday, 13 May 2011 03:52 AM
I have so many tamil friends from Jaffna. It's a minority in Jaffna who followed Prabakaran and a generation lost in the war have this kind of attitude towards the south and the Sinhalese. We must remember, it's all about politics up in the north too and their politicians are as bad as ours. That's the core of the problem.

THE GOVT MUST STOP HOODWINKING THE PUBLIC & THE WORLD AND TRY TO SOLVE THE ETHNIC ISSUE WITHIN OUR COUNTRY. NO ROOM WHATSOEVER MUST BE GIVEN FOR ANYONE TO INTERFERE INTO OUR OWN AFFAIRS. TWO YEARS NOW AND WE SHOULD SEE SOME PRCGRESS TOWARDS THIS CORE ISSUE.

These 'few' leaders and their actions are backed by a vast majority in the country, an important fact to bare in mind. Surely you are aware this issue is not as simplistic and straightforward as you make it sound

Jabos Friday, 13 May 2011 03:46 AM
The issue is not with the EP, but with the GOSL. Our people are not doing what's right or do enough to get a clear message across to them - where are our diplomats? they are sleeping while these politicians speak to the Gallery over here by scolding Europe and USA instead of educating them. No wonder they have got the wrong message, not forgetting that the LTTE remains do a damn good job of convincing the west of made up situations in SL

Not only hill country, look at Colombo itself. Is there any problem. This problem is created by Tamil Diaspora. Terrorism in SL is a good reason for them to have asylum visa. So they still trying to create some problem within the communities.

Hey, Raju and TMA
The Daily Mirror has taken the most important point first, which is Scocial and green parties tried to the immediate establishment of an International Justice Mechanism on Sri Lanka. So thats why the daily mirror has taken that point first.
And also EU statement also there later on, which is not a new one, that the EU always saying that in a regular basis....
Pls use your brain if you have any........

LTTE has a massive amount of money which is now used for propaganda instead of war. They funded Obams election campain (Tamils for Obama) as well as for Hilary Clinton.
They can buy people such as members of various commissions. Everything is money. Unless the government initite counter propaganda it will affect the image of Sri lanka heavily

I don't know what happened during the war. But the resolution passed was that the Tamil community should be treated fair and as equals. In my opinion the Tamil community in SL has our sympathy and is treated even better than Sinhalese and enjoys better priviledges than Sinhalese currently. So we have met the EU conditions.
