MS allies break ranks



Disappointed by the decision to nominate former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as a candidate at the upcoming polls, the political leaders who backed President Maithripala Sirisena decided on Friday to quit the United People's Freedom Alliance and initiate a dialogue with the United National Party (UNP), the Daily Mirror learns.

Political figures including Ministers Rajitha Senaratne, Patali Champika Ranawaka, Duminda Dissanayake and Arjuna Ranatunga had met the President on Friday and announced their decision.

According to sources, the National United Good Governance Front led by Mr. Ranawaka and other political leaders will initiate a dialogue with the UNP on Saturday.

Mr. Ranawaka will contest from Colombo while Western Provincial Council Member Hirunika Premachandra will also join the fray from Colombo.(Kelum Bandara)
