Disappointed by the decision to nominate former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as a candidate at the upcoming polls, the political leaders who backed President Maithripala Sirisena decided on Friday to quit the United People's Freedom Alliance and initiate a dialogue with the United National Party (UNP), the Daily Mirror learns.

Political figures including Ministers Rajitha Senaratne, Patali Champika Ranawaka, Duminda Dissanayake and Arjuna Ranatunga had met the President on Friday and announced their decision.

According to sources, the National United Good Governance Front led by Mr. Ranawaka and other political leaders will initiate a dialogue with the UNP on Saturday.

Mr. Ranawaka will contest from Colombo while Western Provincial Council Member Hirunika Premachandra will also join the fray from Colombo.(Kelum Bandara)

We Sri Lankans are always grumbling, selfish, never thinking there could be different sides to a story. MS said he will serve for only one term. He is also a great ally of RW than CBK. RW has been consulted on political matters behind the scenes by MS. MS also wants to project himself as a fair and gentleman politician. So he allows his arch nemesis MR to contest. This in turn will cause strong crossovers from the UPFA to UNP. It will also cause all minority parties to align with UNP. RW wins with western powers backing him. he becomes PM and later on president or most powerful man in Sri Lanka. Still better option than MR. CBK is upset over a strong UNP and will leave country but will not oppose due to revenge on MR. We will forget all this and will praise MS later on for ensuring democracy, even to people who thought to do him harm. Politics is not just muscle but brains and chess maneuvering. Though this is a theory it is a strong possibility.

Maithripala Sirisena does not have the capacity perform the duties as the President.. Therefore he needs Mahinda. Maithripala agreed to pruned down the powers of the Executive Presidency due to the very same reason.
