A new traffic control system (traffic lights) with a countdown has been implemented in several junctions in Colombo to reduce traffic and accidents, more will be setup according to their necessity, the Special Commissioner for the Colombo Municipal Council Omar Kamil told Daily Mirror online

He added the new traffic control system was put in place after identifying junctions which were prone to more accidents and that the new more efficient traffic control system will be implemented in Colombo first and then probably be extended to other areas accordingly.

The CMC Commissioner also advised motorist to plan their journeys before hand to reduce the traffic rush and act with discipline when driving to make Colombo motorways less congested. (Daily Mirror online)

Countdown system is good for the motorist's, since at different traffic lights the amber (yellow) changes at different intervals. There is no uniformity. However, unless and until a penalty is imposed on pedestrians who cross the road aginst the signals the major issue will not be resolved. In fact this results in many motor accidents (collisions) too.

Hats off to the authorities. We should have a system to fine the pedestrians too, not only motorists. See how ignorant this lady is or may be she doesn't care and have regard to the motorists. Pedestrians too should be educated to follow the rules specially in Sri Lanka.

Other Asians should see Sri Lanka as a miracle at some point of time in future..for that we should work hard..We cannot blame others or expect others to do it for us...let us start with WALKING ON RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE ROAD..let us commit to it & practice it for one month..the whole nation..others will follow suit

I have seen them working fine where it is installed. The problem is that there is a policeman underneath the traffic light controlling traffic. It appears that a section of police is unaware of how to implement the concept. Instead of controlling traffic standing under the traffic light they should stand by the road side and book the errand drivers and of course JAY WALKERS. it is a pity police is trying to bring in road discipline only by booking the driverswhile jay walking is happening under their nose

This is a very good move.Unfortunately people in srilanka are so ignorant and cross the road irrespective of the sign.this system is very effective in the west/Northe america.To make this a success people should also be educated and at the same time a penalty system should also be introduced to catch and punish the wrong doers

All these systems will not have any effect if you do not take strong measures to educate the public and drivers on how they should you use it! People often cross the roads, specially in the busy Fort area, at pedestrian crossings irrespective of whether the light is green or red for them. Similarly, many drivers, specially, three wheelers, private bus drivers and government vehicles ignore the traffic light system and drive through. This is the main cause for accidents etc.

This system is long over due. When I returned to SL I was telling this over and over to save life.That is30 years a go. When I try to cross at a crossing for the car to stop.My Brother asked me how long I am going to wait and how long my holidays were.? If they do not stop fine them and give Dr's treatment.Good luck to this project. Next should be this Private DRs. Make them work in the Govt Hospital not private pratice.
