No nomination for Mervyn, Sajin, Duminda?



The party seriously considers the exclusion of three MPs who have tarnished their reputations. It is learnt that most party seniors are not in favour of giving nomination to them.
President Maitripala Sirisena has had reservation about giving nomination to three former MPs of the United People Freedom Alliance (UPFA) charged with various allegations, it is learnt. The President has given the authority for UPFA Secretary Susil Premajayantha and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Secretary Anura Priyadarshana Yapa to select candidates in consultation with other party leaders. According to UPFA sources, the President will not interfere with the selection of candidates. The UPFA has already started initial work for the selection of candidates. The party has decided to give nomination to all the MPs who served in the last Parliament representing it. However, the party seriously considers the exclusion of three MPs who have tarnished their reputation. They are Mervyn Silva, Sajin da Vass Gunawardane and Duminda Silva It is learnt that most party seniors are not in favour of giving nomination to them. These MPs were notorious for various miscreants during the previous rule. The UPFA nomination committee will meet again to discuss the preparation of lists and the allocation of slots among its allies. Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP), a key ally of the UPFA, has sought nomination for ten members on the UPFA ticket. Besides, Democratic Left Front led by former Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara has sought nominations for its members to contest from five districts under the UPFA.
Meanwhile, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been requested to select Ratnapura, Kurunegala or Gampaha to contest this election. A source from the UPFA said he would consider Kurunegala for this purpose.(Kelum Bandara)
