The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) said today its Cyber Watch Unit had identified nearly 30 sex offenders and 300 potential sex offenders who had allegedly lured children and youth through social media network sites.
NCPA Chairman Anoma Dissanayake told a media briefing today that the Cyber Watch Unit had arrested seven people on charges of perpetrating crimes against children and young people through social media networks.
She said the NCPA had also completed the process of building strong cases against 30 more sex offenders, who will be arrested in the next few months.
“We have also identified 300 more potential offenders out of more than 2,500 social media users who have initiated contact through profiles maintained by undercover NCPA officials posing as children or young people,” Ms. Dissanayake said.
The ‘Cyber Watch Unit’ that that began operations in early 2000 through aid by the International Labour Organization was revived this year and is now completely funded by the government.
Meanwhile, the NCPA said apart from amendments that have been proposed to the Children and Young Persons Ordinance of 1939, the NCPA is also introducing two new Bills pertaining to Foster Care and Persons who work with Children.
“We have noted the importance of children who came into state care of receiving the love and care from a household with a family instead of keeping them in homes. Therefore, we will be introducing a Foster Care Act for the first time in Sri Lanka,” she said.
Ms. Dissanayake said regulations will also be strengthened concerning establishments and persons providing child care services under the regulations proposed through ‘Working with Children Act’ that would help improve standards of quality and safety.
