The police department will from today strictly implement the law which only allows three passengers to travel on the rear seat of a three-wheeler.
Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said this would help minimise road accidents. He said between April 1 and May 7 there had been 27 accidents involving three-wheelers leaving 34 people killed.
SP Rohana said legal action would be taken against the three-wheeler owner and the driver if an accident were to take place and added that some 670,000 three-wheelers were registered to operate in the country.
Meanwhile, the three-wheeler meter-taxi association yesterday welcomed the move to implement the law limiting the number of passengers on a three-wheeler to three. (Indika Hewawitharana)

That goes not only to the three wheel drives but to all Sri Lankans of all ages and social positions. In Sri Lanka there is not social manners or etiquette.

3 wheelers have no doors. If there are 4-5 passengers on the back seat, and the 3 wheeler goes at 50kmph and has to suddenly brake, people will go flying from the sides because they're not securely positioned.
it's quite simple actually.
those who complain about 'cant afford', although we all have sympathy for those who cannot afford a bigger vehicle, the answer is not to put ppl in danger, but for the govt to improve the public transport system so they can make those journeys safely by bus or train.

I reply via myself: Is there no end to the cynical and sarcastic comments on this country's problems? None of us has a magic wand, but we all might offer something positive and then beat the shit out of those who go against the grain of common sense and basic decency.

Human beings are intelligent and need to be plan their life unlike cats and dogs. Number of children is according to the level of care one can provide and financial capability. If you are unable to provide adequate care to children, then it is your duty to restrict the number of children in your life, unless you want to live similar to an animal without civilised responsibilities.

The meter taxi will do what ever to raise money for themselves, but the people who travel are the once have to pay, normally 4 people an travel in a rear seat of a three-wheeler, but this government thinks, us people have lot of money to spend so they made it 3. Wow what a law.... is this the future we want.

I have seen 5 persons in the back seat at times. This makes the three wheeler unstable and lopsided making it topple taking bends. That is one way of minimizing accidents.

It is very good to limit the number of passengers (three only) that a three wheeler can transport. Additionally, at the first time the driver and the owner should be fined and should be annotated in the ownership documents. However, if caught second time then three wheeler should be confiscated, licence of the driver withdrawn in addition to fines levid. In western countries a normal sedan can carry only four passengers without the driver if caught carrying more the driver will be punished and the extra passengers are ordered to find another mode of transportation.

While increasing prices of everything, why this rules,f want to minimize road accident, please enforce other road rules, as well as improve road conditions, What about 3 folds of over loaded passengers in public transport bus and trains, do the govt. think over loaded bus and trains never meet accidents. only to 3 wheels and cars/vans. Wh double game for govt . and public different law.
