Pakistan seeks help from Lankans for flood victims



The Sri Lanka Pakistan Friendship Association and the High Commission of Pakistan in Sri Lanka, today made an urgent appeal to the Sri Lankan public for flood relief to assist the six million people affected by the current floods in the Sindh Province of Pakistan.

The Sri Lanka-Pakistan Friendship Association said it appeals to all “friendly and grateful” Sri Lankans, the public sector, the corporate sector and other well wishers to join them in showing solidarity, friendship and gratitude to a country and its people who have always stood by Sri Lanka in its times of crisis and helped Sri Lanka in so many ways.

The floods have fully damaged 539,899 houses. Another 848,412 houses have suffered partial damage.  Almost 80,000 livestock have been washed away by flood waters in Sindh. Crops on 2,800,000 acres have been destroyed or are affected by the rains. These mostly include cash crops like cotton, banana, dates, chili and sugarcane. About 31,960 villages have been badly affected by the floods.

All 23 districts of Sindh have been severely affected by the rain, rendering thousands of people homeless and causing damages to crops. Badin, Tharparkar, Sanghar and Nawabshah are the worst affected areas.

All monetary contributions can be deposited in the Pakistan High Commission’s Special Account titled Prime Ministers Relief Fund 2011 at the Habib Bank Ltd, Colombo 11.

In the alternative, donations in kind of the following items (which are very urgently required) may be delivered at the High Commission premises at 53/6, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 07 in coordination with:
