The rejection of a large number of nomination lists UPFA and the UNP could have been averted if the amendments to the Local Authorities Bill were passed in Parliament, Parliamentary Select Committee Chairman Dinesh Gunawardena said.

He said election officials must not be blamed for rejecting the lists as they had acted under the existing regulations.

In an apparent indictment on the two main political parties for their failure to pass the Bill when it was presented in Parliament in October, the he said almost all the weaknesses and controversial clauses of the existing Local Authorities Bill had been removed in the proposed Bill.(Sandun A. Excellent observation. Thanks for standing up to the two main parties including your own. THis is very true. We would have had a election without the manaape fight if the bill was passed.
