Police to strictly implement carriageway laws

Regulations applicable to carriageways will be strictly implemented for a week (April 6 to 10) in several areas in Colombo, police said.

Police said adherence of the law would decrease traffic congestion in the city. The law will be implemented as a pilot project and thereafter fully implemented.
Motorists will not be allowed to cross lanes arbitrarily and will have to strictly adhere to rules and regulation pertaining to driving in single lanes. The Department stressed that legal action will be taken against motorists who break this law.

The pilot project will be implemented from Moratuwa to NSA Roundabout of Galle Face Green on the Galle Road, Kollupitiya to Bammbalapitiya on the Duplication Road (R.A. De Mel Mawatha) Borella Senanayeka Junction to Polduwa on the Sri Jayawardanapura Road, Peliyagoda to Kiribathgoda on the Kandy road and Peliyagoda to Negambo on the Wattala Road. Traffic manners or social etiquette has to taught at primary school. We Sri Lankans do not how to walk on the road, drive, sit in a bus or train. This applies to the people in tie.

I like to see the faces of the private bus operators! The way to deal with this is by strictly adhering to the departure and arrival schedule of buses. Also, motor bikes and three-wheelers. THEN we will se better traffic movements.

This is fine. But, the root cause is DEEPLY ingrained in the Sri Lankan psyche. When people learn that they have to wait their turn, all of this will change. The police effort will do nothing to change the psyche.

this is a very gd move.I hope this includes restriction of heavy vehicles3wheelers & other slow moving vehicles to left lanes limiting one vehicle to one lane & punishing those who create 23 raws in between lanes sp motorcyclists n 3w by overtaking from left punishing bus drvs who stop in the middle of the lanes haphazardly punishing those who dont adhere to corect lane & punishing pedestrians crossing roads haphazardly.

Further I feel we need a change in attitude of drivers to give way for fast moving vehicles sp when they are using the right side lanes. via DM Android App

If police implement basic traffic law on roads likes stopping buses anywhere to pickup and drop passengers, sudden turn by 3 wheeler for passenger hunting, parking vehicles on no parking area, on bus stop etc. specially all school bus/van and private vehicles who parks during school hours on the main road covering 2 lanes completely violating traffic law. In Wellawatte non of the bus halt is used for bus stop. many hotels/eating houses convert the bus halt for their customer. police receive periodical bribe and not taking action on them

Younger generations grown up not seeing driving to law, probably not aware of what.s been talking about. Therefore, it is important to run a "Awareness Campaign" through TV and print media, will no doubt be beneficial to all.

No such regulation will ever succeed in realising its objective with theSri Lankan Police steeped in corruption. It will only lead filling the pockets of traffic policemen. Further, they are scared of, private bus and/or three wheeler owners.

This is not practical until they strictly impose rules on buses and bus halts. Often traffic congestion are caused by buses and bus halts.

Excellent if this is done regularly. I have seen a 154 route bus in which I was in going across all lanes from left to right from W.watte till B.talle road at breakneck speed in the daytime. Not a single Police officer in sight but they very good at hanging around corner junctions to catch motorists

The Police needs to discipline the mighty private bus drivers and the nasty 3wheel drivers on the road who have no sense of road rules and manners..... the galle road will be free of congesion if the busses pulled in to the bays at the bus halts rather than stoping on the road....why do police officers look the other way when the bus drivers do these insane moves right in front of their eyes???
