A prominent Colombo politician is behind the attack on the UNP protest yesterday, but we will not be deterred by these obstacles as we owe it to the people, UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya told Daily Mirror online.
“We don’t believe the police version of the account and several police personnel not taking action when these thugs were roaming about freely”, he said
The Deputy leader added that the UNP was conducting a peaceful protest calling for the release of former army commander Sarath Fonseka when they came under attack in Borella.
Several person were injured and vehicles were badly damaged when an armed group attacked the protesters with swords, bicycle chains, knifes, iron rods and Molotov cocktails, Karu Jayasuriya said
Furthermore he said that the protest which consisted of 800 or more supporters were peacefully calling for the release of former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka as they believe that he was behind the suppression of the LTTE and played a key role in winning the peace.
“It is an insult to the country when a peaceful protest is attacked on its Independence Day, what Independence is there? When freedom of expression is curtailed and freedom of assembly is not guaranteed. This is not the first time these incidents have occurred”, UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya said. HM - Egypt was the same (man!). Since, they had the (solo)peace pact with Israel, there was peace at the border. But within, gradual erosion of freedom for most sectors except for some middle class & influential positions who reaped special benefits from Govt. - as a result, President's mandate read over 93% at 3 elections. But now we know. This is a timely free reminder to the President & Co that they cannot get away with murder. Every conspirator caught with their hand in the candy jar will be held to account.

This politician trying to get points from MR by assaulting peaceful protest. UNP join with JVP should continue similar events in larger scale. People power can't be suppressed for ever. One day paid thugs get hammered. This government now living by selling the war. Again people are not stupid for ever. This will lead into Uprising like in Egypt in future. We can see what will happen to Sri Lankan Gamal.

For Sri Lanka to be truely democratic we need the UNP, JVP and all others who would like to support them to get the people around to make "people's power 2011" . This would be the best thing to change the government. This has to be done now and not later. Explain what is freedom and what is needed for basic life for the poor people. Let us rally everyone together if we need to change the government.

That's not going to happen because majority of the people having been living in this country since JR,RP and CBK were ruling, therefore this is nothing new. Politicians tend to forget about the human rights when they are in the ruling party.

There are millions of poor people suffering due to floods and bad weather. It is vital all should get together and let a helping hand to them at this moment. This is not the time for any responsible party or organization to have thovil & circus on road. It adds insult to injury when these "Bahubootha" events are done on independence day of the nation.

I'm amazed to see how ppl in SL - wants to somehow get the party they love into power even if it means putting SL into a crisis like in Egypt. Get a life ppl - If UNP comes they won't def. not make your salaries grow or reduce the cost of living. Maybe they'd sell few public organizations. The way country is going now is the best for the last 20-30 years.
