Politics moving down the generations: SB’s son

There is a new trend in the field of politics where the sons of the politician fathers are given opportunities to enter politics. By proving this trend, Tharu Dissanayake, the son of Minister S. B. Dissanayake is getting ready to enter politics in the near future. This is a discussion that a journalist had with him.

Q. is the electorate you are going to contest from?

Hanguranketha.

Q.  Father’s electorate?

Appachchi’s old electorate is our native village.

Q. The same family members are engaged in two political parties, Are there any conflicts?

No, we are all united. Appachchi contested from Kandy. Uncle from Hanguranketha and he was  a UNPer.

Q.  Politics is brought forward from generation to generation?

Not from generation to  generation. Due to the service rendered by Appachchi, there is a big demand from the people for our family members. Appachchi went to Kandy. Therefore, there is a demand from the people,  for me or any other family member. I lived with politics from my childhood.

Q.  Many people enter politics for earning money? What about you and your profession?

I was well employed in Australia. I earned much money there. I can’t earn that money here. We sold all our properties there and came back to Sri Lanka. I have earned much money and I am well off with money. My wife and her family members have business. In addition to that I have a shop where children’s vehicles are sold. It is one of its kind in Sri Lanka. We have enough money to do politics.

Q. It is said that politics is a corrupt business. Why do you try to enter such a field?

There is a conspiracy to destroy the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.  My effort is to  put forward  solutions for the problems faced by the party. I cannot tell anything about the internal situation of the party. I am still immature as far as politics is concerned.

Q.  Have you got membership of the SLFP?

I am a member since   my childhood. I am in the hope of entering politics. After the demise of my uncle Saliya,  I am attending to  his political activities at Hanguranketha.

Q. Have you got any position in the party?

I do not have any position.

Q. Which do you prefer? National politics or provincial politics?

I think of getting elected to Parliament through politics.  That decision  is left with the party.

Q.  Have you started the election campaign in Hanguranketha?

An amount of 338 million rupees had been allocated for development work at  Hanguranketha by   several ministries. Due to the demise of Saliya Bappa, I am going to continue that work. About 1 million had been allocated for each village.

Q.   Are you satisfied with the work being carried out by the government?

There are loopholes in the development work. However, no one can say  that the country is not developed.

Q.  Your Appachchi is a radical character. Do you approve his attitudes?

He has taught us not to be afraid of talking direct. He is more hot-tempered than I.  He has been used to talking in a straightforward manner.

Q.  Do you approve of the policies of your father regarding higher education?

When taken in their entirety, universities are in a better position today. In those days there was a situation where ministers had to flee due to the behaviour of students. Vice chancellors lived in fear due to the behaviour of students. However, the students are intelligent today.

Q.  When Appachchi goes beyond his limits, won’t you advise him?

I do not advise him - Nothing about politics. (By Dayaseeli Linyanage / Translated By R. Somasiri)
