The 33rd Inspector General of Police (IGP) N.K Illangakoon said that he has taken steps to give proper training to 18,000 policemen who have not completed their training and added that this was a reason that discipline required by policemen is not kept to the required standards.
“Therefore we have taken steps to give them proper police training and rebuild the police-public relationship, IGP Illangakoon said.
He added that the standards expected by all of us are not met, notably in the Katunayake incident”.
“Due to indiscipline acts committed by some policemen the good work done by most of the policemen is not noted. Without discipline any organization cannot achieve success in its objectives”, he said.
“During the war policemen were sent to North and East to assist the security forces. Therefore they could not give firm attention to the needs of the public and assistance expected from the police”, he noted.
“Now with the dawn of peace, the police will be reorganized into a force with discipline which is always ready to assist the public. Without the public there won’t be a police”, he added.
“We have identified that reducing road accidents is the on the top of the list. A parliamentary committee has been appointed to find out the reasons that cause these road accidents and also to change some of the traffic laws. Thousands of new vehicles access to the road system everyday but the road network is not enough to handle the vehicles”, he said.
IGP Illangakoon also said that discussions are underway to have a new uniform for the police department. “We are considering all the proposals and therefore we are keeping all options open”, he said. (Daily Mirror online)
