Protesters were brutally assaulted: VIjitha Herath

Speaking to Daily Mirror online a short while ago JVP media Spokesman Vijitha Herath said that the police brutally assaulted a peaceful demonstration in Maligawatta.

"We were having a peaceful protest against the increase in fuel prices and other essentials. We were going to walk towards Fort from the Maligawatte Grounds and the police used barriers to prevent us. Thereafter when the crowd did not back down the Police assaulted us and used water cannons and tear gas on the protesters," he said.

The MP stated that the demonstrators gathered after the assault and held a meeting after which the crowd peacefully dispersed. "There was a crowd of over 7,000 and after the police brutality, we gathered again and held a meeting condemning the despicable act and then dispersed," he said. (Hafeel Farisz)
