An awareness campaign on poisoning will be held during May 23 – 30 due to over 78,000 cases of poisoning being reported island wide with over 1560 deaths annually, the Health Ministry stated.
Health Ministry spokesman W.M.D. Wanninayake told Daily Mirror Online that a national poison prevention week will be declared from May 23 onwards. “The most common causes of poisoning include venomous snake bites, pesticides and medications as well,” he said adding that the mortality rate is of the poisoning cases reported countrywide is about 2%.
