I traveleld from Kandy to Colombo by Rajadhani express on Tuesday 31st January when there was an engine breakdown and all passengers had to catch the next train. After paying for the luxury AC class, I had to find a seat in a crowded third class carriage. On returning the next day, I saw the Superintendent of Railways about a refund of this ticket. He arranged for a refund from the Kandy office, but after boarding the train demanded both my tickets back and then we were informed at Rambackwella that a general strike on all stations meant the train could not proceed to Kandy. I had to get down with my luggage and find a hotel in Pinawela or take an auto back to Kandy that cost me 2,000 rupees. Many foreigners were stranded who had flight or hotel accomodation bookings. Many complained of delays on the Badulla - Kandy line as well. When are the railways going to upgrade their services to a world class standard for both Sri Lankan commuters and foreign travellers. It is truly a disgrace!

We need a mini-metro rail system that runs inside major cities, this will reduce traffic and pollution !

With one of the most scenic railway systems in the world to Badulla, its sad that only deterioration has taken place with the infrastructure stagnant for years and only dirtier and tardier trains - first built by the Brits to transport tea from the plantations to Colombo.
By the way, this service caters to many more thousands of people than those in Colombo who want to get to Galle in an hour, what?!.

Though there were some inconvenience, I was fortunate enough as Expo Rail had a plan "B" by arranging a luxury coach - however when they realized the strike is being called off, they had to courtesy to call me back and i had to take the train during the night. Anyway its quite good experience.
