Ranil holds crisis talks with MPs

Embattled UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who arrived in the country on Tuesday had decided to meet party MPs in groups in order to obtain their support to end the party crisis, informed sources said yesterday.

Daily Mirror learnt from sources that most of the MPs who had met Mr. Wickremesinghe had requested him to patch up with Co Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa. They have told him that he had made a mistake by sidelining Mr. Premadasa after appointing him as the co deputy leader. MPs have told him the issue on Mr. Jayasuriya being promoted as the leader would not have come up if Mr. Premadasa was not sidelined.

Meanwhile, Deputy Leader Karu Jayausirya who was on a tour to India returned to the country yesterday and met party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at his (Mr. Wickremesinghe) office at Marcus Fernando Mawatha last morning.

Mr. Jayasuriya who was approached by few journalists when he was leaving the office of Mr. Wickremesinghe at No 30 Marcus Fernando Mawatha said he had met the party leader but refrained from divulging any details on the discussion.

However, he said every one would get to know the party’s next move soon. He said the crisis in the party would be resolved through dialogue.

Mr. Jayasuriya said he was not aware of many things that were reported on him during the last few days.  He said he was engaged in some religious observances during his tour to India.

Party sources also said that a decision had been made to end the crisis before the Parliamentary Group meeting that is to be held on August 9.

It was reported that the party hierarchy had decided to address the grievances of the reformists. However they said several rounds of discussions would have to be held between the reformists and the party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe before the matter is resolved.
