Opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe met President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning to seek the release of General Sarath Fonseka, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told Daily Mirror online.
Mr. Attanayaka also said that the Opposition Leader requested the President to allow him to meet General Fonseka as no one except his wife had been granted permission to visit the detained General.
“Mr. Wickremasinghe explained to the President that General Fonseka’s arrest was illegal. He also requested to him to release the General as soon as possible. Mr. Wickramasingha further told the President that he wanted to meet General Fonseka as no one other than his wife was allowed to see him,” Mr. Attanayaka said.
Mr. Wickremasinghe told reporters on Wednesday that neither the constitution nor the army Act contained any legal provisions for the continued detention of the former Army Commander.
He further charged that Defence Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella, Media Center for National Security Director Lakshman Hulugalla and Military Spokesman Prasad Samasaingha had contradicted each other when giving reasons for the arrest and detention of General Fonseka.

As a responsible opposition leader and a true Sri Lankan citizen he has sought the most suitable way to resolve a conflict rather than encouraging violent street protests which will harm the national unity which is the only way for certain parties & people having vested interests. Whole ountry will respect you in this.

I really don't understand these people commenting here.
9 months ago Ranil was the bad guy who everyone hate commented on right on the daily mirror website (Go and look at some articles dated march-may 2009). and now somehow he's the good guy? he hasn't done ANYTHING in the past 6 years except for persuading 1 of the greatest people ever lived in this country, General SF, to dig his own grave.
I have read alot of intelligent comments in these forums but now i'm having difficulty understanding the myopic view of these commenters

Friend I guess you were born only yesterday. We have all seen Ranils infamous heroics and utterances over the past years. That is why he continues to remain second best all the time.
At least give some respect to the voters. They have all rejected him all the time. As for fonseka we don't have to go too far. How much do you know of Fonseka maybe like me since he became the commander. Even during this period from what we know about his arms deals. His wild talk, ill bred attitude, How can you call him straight and clean.
It is a shame for Ananda college for his speech reflects what he learnt at that premier Buddhist School

Ranil would have begged MR to keep the SF in the custody until general election finishes.
64 11
Friday, 12 February 2010 08:39 AM
Mr. Ranil Wickramsinghe must be in a hurry at this moment to get Mr Fonseka released from military police custody as Mr. Fonseka rendered a great service to Mr. Ranil by contesting the presidential election held on 26th January. Thereby Mr Ranil was able to escape narrowly from loosing his opposition leadership otherwise his(Mr. Ranil's) leadership in his party would have been questioned this time too by his party rebel group. So Mr. Ranil must be thankful to Mr. Fonseka for saving him from the chaotic situation which may have sprung up due to his weak leadership .

Ranil Wickramasinghe is the most genuine politician Sri Lanka has at the moment. See his intellectual and professional approach in political issues. All Sri Lankans must realize the value of this great gentleman, who is definitely free of corruption, and should support him bringing the professionalism to the Sri Lankan politics. Also general Fonseka is a straight and clean person through out his life, and therefore his alliance with Ranil is obviously a proper match. Sirs, don't be discouraged by any of the third class obstacles, the educated community is always behind you. The truth will win.

Good move by Ranil, Although he may seem funny to many with his outlook, he's got the right brains to steer this country in the right path.. if your'e looking at econimic development, he's the man, he knows his facts & has the knowledge, i wonder if MR has adequate knowledge about the economy, all he knows is to fool the people with his Bollywood Skills.

None of this would have happened if we had a strong enough Leader of the Opposition in the first place. Ranil has hogged this pivotal place for too long, without being effective and without nurturing anyone else to take his place. Real dog in the manger. Fonseka stepped into and filled the void Ranil created for so long. Ranil is ultimately responsible for this regime.

Mr Fonseka has forgotten every thing.Fonseka is not a grateful person who bit the helping hand of the president. The president is the one who elevated Fonseka to the position CDS who was supposed to retire from the service(Army) in 2005 when Mr. Rajapaksa came to power.Mr Fonseka overestimated himself that he could win the last presidential election as he won the war against the LTTE terrorists. It is certain that Mr.Fonseka himself may have not won the war without the help of the political leadership.Mr. Fonseka thinks that honour gained by winning the war should go to him alone that's why behaves like a mad man after the presidential election.Mr. Fonseka must learn more of politics. He is still in the political kindergarten that he is still not matured enough to realize.
