The UNP rebels who crossed over to the government yesterday warned that they will resort to legal action in the event they are removed from the UNP membership by the party leadership.
UNP MP Earl Gunasekera, speaking to Daily Mirror online said that the party had no right to cancel their membership when the membership of several other UNP members who had crossed over to the government still remains.
Gunasekera challenged the UNP Leadership to name one member whose membership has been cancelled on the basis that he crossed over to the government adding that if such a move is taken then even the current UNP Deputy Leader should lose his membership for joining the government a few years back.
While echoing the same sentiments, UNP MP Manusha Nanayakara warned that they will not hesitate to file legal action against the UNP if their membership is cancelled. He also claimed that more UNP members are expected to join the government.
UNP MPs Upeksha Swarnamali, Earl Gunasekara, Abdul Cader, N. Wijesingha, Lakshman Seneviratne and Manusha Nanayakkara crossed over to the government yesterday after support the 18th Amendment.
The UNP later said the six members who crossed over will be suspended from the party and a disciplinary inquiry will be launched over their actions. (Daily Mirror online)
