Reveal findings of Commissions

UNP today requested the government to submit to Parliament, the reports of the Mahanama Tilakaratne commission appointed to probe the recent Katunayake Free Trade Zone (FTZ) incident and the Shirani Tilakawardane Commission appointed to probe the arms deals.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a news conference today that these reports should be submitted to the House as those who are responsible for these incidents and deals should be brought to book.

Mr. Attanayake charged that report of the Tilakawardane commission that probed the arms deals two years ago had been swept under the carpet.

He said the government had appointed several commissions from time to time with several objectives but the findings and recommendations of these have been swept under the carpet. Mr. Attanayake said the APRC which was appointed to come up with a solution to the national issue had also suffered the same fate.

Mr. Attanayake explained that the reports of these commissions cannot bypass Parliament.

Besides he said the charges against various government officials should also be probed as no action have been taken against though they have been proven guilty. “One of these officials whose fraudulent deals were proven had been given a promotion instead of a punishment, “he charged.

The UNP General Secretary also charged that the government is still taking the ‘national defense’ as an excuse for almost every thing though the conflict had ended two years ago. “It is not right to take cover under defense as the war which was the biggest threat to the national security ended two years ago,” he added.
