Rs 2.5 million reward has been put in place for any person who gives information that leads to the arrests of the armed gang that robbed a vehicle carrying Rs. 70 million to a private bank when the vehicle was passing through Peliyagoda, police spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody told Daily Mirror online.

Any information regarding the robbery can be notified to the police through special telephone numbers – 011-2662311, 011-2662323, 011-2685151

On Friday morning an armed gang robbed a bank vehicle at gunpoint which was transporting cash to be deposited in bank teller machines. Six persons in bikes with weapons had stopped the vehicle in Thelangapatha, Peliyagoda and robbed the cash as well as the weapons of the security persons.

Five special police teams have been appointed to look in to the robbery according to the instructions of the IGP Mahinda Balasuriya. (Daily Mirror online)

Banks have outsourced the cash transport to a private company.
Bank is not liable for those transactions where the cash transporting company should look in to this.

the cash transporters will have to pay for this. They are heavily insured too. So, it;s insurance all the way, but not without a fight because of the deviation of the route.

Obviously the insurance company will have to bear the loss , if the bank has complied with the terms and conditions in their policy. Considering the manner in which the cash was transported, route taken and the hours during which it was done, both parties were asking for trouble.

The respective bank official should take the blame for unwise decision to send such a huge sum of money during night time. It should have been transported with a backup security vehicle during day time. However, If the bank had obtained a insurance coverage for "Cash In Transit" they should have been able to recover the loss. However, we would like to know, who will bear the cost of the reward worth Rs.2.5 million.? Bank or Police?
