Savage summoned on Fonseka Comment

By Dianne Silva

Minister of Foreign Affairs Rohitha Bogallagama yesterday summoned the Head of the European Union Delegation to Sri Lanka Ambassador Bernard Savage to discuss an observation made by the Ambassador with regard to the candidacy of retired Chief of Defense Staff Sarath Fonseka diplomatic sources told the Daily Mirror.

According to sources, the Foreign Minister had observed that Ambassador Savage’s comment on ex-military men that had ventured into politics, citing the example of the former US President Dwight D. Eisenhower, could be construed as promoting and adding value to a particular candidature with intention of influencing voters in the forth coming election.

The Minister further noted that these statements also contradict the EU’s stance on bipartisanship in the upcoming election.
