The Supreme Court today directed the Attorney General to consider instructing the relevant authorities to postpone for one week the impugned mandatory training in military camps for the students who are eligible to enter the State Universities.
The Court made this direction in the wake of the training for the first batch which is scheduled to be commenced on May 23, 2011 at several Army Camps.
The Bench comprised Justices K.Sripavan, Chandra Ekanayake and Suresh Chandra.
Students for Human Rights filed a fundamental rights petition challenging the decision of the Higher Education Ministry allegedly compelling the students, who are eligible to enter University, into undergoing in-house training within military camps without their consent.
The Petitioner claims it is making this application on behalf of the student community in Sri Lanka who have passed the G C E Advanced Level held in August 2010 and who have gained sufficient marks to be eligible to enter the State Universities in Sri Lanka.

90% of students cannot act like a leader? where did you find it?
Many graduates dont find it difficult to find a job in any sector, other than few Arts grads...Its also realted to the subject matter/curriculum not the leadership qualities you are refering to...Also antharaya is not in all universities, I agree antharayas agenda is not good for grads in many ways (e.g. ragging). The things like ragging has been controled in many unis and lecs are working hard on it....No one can force one particular group to go military traning..they should be given the choice

If Student get leadership training in military camps, it means military can give better leadership to the country, so MR can leave the place and give the chance to SF.

As we have no money to follow private universities we are compelled to follow any training whether we like or not. That is the sin of poverty.

Very unfortunate! Please start it as early as possible!
I had similar training when I was in school hostel. It was changed my life to vast extend and still following as a Manager. It is a known fact that 90% of University students cannot act like a leader. Private sector organizations rather dislike to recruit such people due to their lack of moral and high attitude of motivation. Ultimately government has to save them by giving state sector jobs.
This is where the gap exists. JVP is always happy to fish in the muddy water. If universities tend to produce leaders from the very beginning, It is become a challenging environment to so called “Antharaya”

The Leadership Training Programme, one of the steps of militarization of state, has developed a paradoxical argument whether the Army, which is qualified for military leadership, is the best institution in the country to impart knowledge of leadership to university students by spending more than Rs. 200 million just for three weeks.

not all army personnel are uneducated and not all AL passed students are educated. passing AL is not criteria to say educated. Good leaders are not always educated. i do not mind to have a leadership training from a uneducated army person if he or she really excel in that field. once qualify for Universities, some people are arrogant , but it all depends on the knowledge acquired not paper qualifications.

However an uneducated army soldier can be much more disciplined and good in leading than a "qualified student"
should we put down forces and say they are "uneducated"? if they entered the university and not choose to fight like a brave soldier willing to sacrifice life.. there would have been more violence in this country:)
if it is a proper training under inspection this might do some good!!

Sadly discipline of the university students of this country has severely deteriorated. Most of them do not properly respect their lecturers. All we know how they treat their new coming brothers and sisters. It is clear that university administration has failed to implement discipline among students and this is right time to bring another party to the picture. As we know school cadets also getting a training in military camps for a certain period. This is not such a military one but leadership training. Sadly some people commented here have questioned the qualifications of forces officials to train uni students. We clearly know how many medical , engineering and other graduates serving country in all forces. On the other hand these people must realize that A/L result is not the only qualification in the world. remember education without discipline is worthless…!

Uneducated?? Which rock have you been living under buddy?? We have a professional highly capable army.
The same army who defeated the what was the world's deadliest terrorist group. Which I am sorry to say, most of the people who have written their comments here have forgotten.
And in case the young university hopefuls do not know it, similar forms of training is also offered in the coporate world in the form of 'outward bound' or leadership training.
The idea is not military training, or brainwashing to obey commands, its about getting the self confidence to face challenging situations. This is what will be taught in the leadership training conducted by the military.

Calm down..There is nothing to get panicked!!!!
As you know Military Training is mandatory in many countries like Singapore,Israel,South Korea,Russia,China and many more......
I am sure students will be more disciplined and sure to be mentally toughed after they are been trained.
We will see no strikes in Universities and it will be a slap in the face of JVP

Just beacuse some one passed AL , do you think they are educated. Is that the ultimate. There are so many intelligent , brave , innovative people in our brave forces.
So called educted would have shit in their pants .. if sent for the battle front.
You should know that education is not by hearting books , past paers & folowing tution classes . The real learning come from the living in the society, by showing that you are ready to learn good things from anybody in the society.

Guys, it is not the common army officers who will do this training. It will be the people officers who train the army and they are internationally qualified. Army soldiers and army special training officers are different calibre people mate. In fact these people when they retire take training assignments to majaor companies in SL and indeed Asia to train corporate leaders for a lot of money. I know personally they are soo damn good.

Most soldiers who joined the armed forces in the past few years, did so because of the enticing salary, or because they just couldn't get a job or because they were hoodwinked by the TV ads which made it seem cool to be in the armed forces. Only when they went to the front did they realize that war was hell. That is the reason for the thousands of desertions. Only a small number joined out of true or blind patriotism.

so bad move superior court, at least should have waited and see how effective.
