The government has decided to make wearing seat belts compulsory while driving vehicles with English number plates and also imposed a ban on driving vehicles with garage numbers or CC numbers, the President’s Office said.
“In order to curtail the import rackets, the government has decided to impose a ban for using garage numbers or CC numbers with immediate effect,” the President’s office said in a statement.
The statement also said the strict action would be taken on those who are using Cellular phone while driving.
The import of passenger buses and lorries with seat belts are also made compulsory with immediate effect.

The MR's office has nothing better to do. This should be done by the Police or Motor Traffic Office. What a President and his office.

ONLY English number plates? LOL is it coz of what the Brits did to MR on his trip? If for the purpose of safety the passengers of all vehicles equipped with the seat belt option should be made compulsory . I guess all vehicles 16 sri series and above has the seat belt option. the 32-, 65- 300- are also equipped so let them adhere to the same law as well. Aslo make it law for the drivers NOT to get off the vehicle until the officer approaches him/her in the vehicle.
This could be safe for the officers and also to know if the drivers were wearing the seat belt or even check on the vehicles seat belt option.
How about ministers using 2 similar cars with identical number plates? I have seen many such vehicles. Now the war is over and no need for all these "POSH" attitudes and also no need for a fleet of security vehicles. coz it's the govt who say there is NO terrorism and all are safe including the foreign tourists.

Seat belts is a good idea but better do something about errant Private bus drivers too who are a menace to society. They honk the horn as if they are chasing away the Elephants. It could burst he ear drums of lil kids and also the way they drive, People should video the way they drive and submit to the news media and relevant authorities, so they can revoke the licence of the Driver FOR EVER and also the conductor for aiding and abetting.
These goons risk the lives of around 40-50 people inside the bus n many more outside.

A very good decision by the head of the state after along time in favor of citizens. But should be applied to all categories of the society including poor ministers and other politicos.
Hope that it has not been introduced to increase fine income.
Also seat belt should not be a option in taxation at the custom office when importing, which is happening now.

Wel that sound good, and why different for the non english numbers, any one who travel on the front seat belt must be compulsory, and no one under 14 years should travel on the front seat. Sound of Leyland busses are disgusting and disturbing. that also should be banned. using horn unessarily should be banned. hording on the road sides makes another head ache. if the govt worried about the safety of the people they should ban all of the above.

Some good comments preceding: too much horning, seat belts for every automobile, no children in the front with their head next to the windscreen, no talking on mobile phones whiule driving or walking down the pavement, enforcing laws already on the books--like tinted windows--, helmets for wives and children on motorbikes, bus tickets, etc. ad nauseam.

It,s a good decision but got delay, any how their should have kind of strict policies regrding motorists. Also, policies on accidents law should be considered to revise on accidents matters. Becouse, some people smoothly avoiding when their faced accidents with foult. The main reason is that they are taking third party insuarance and when they faced accidents they already know victimised party will not follow long process on third party claiming . Therefore these third party policy holders are freely avoinding their liability when they doing damages to others . Therfore it is very imporatnt to re- consider this matter also.
