Thirty-four prisoners who had been sentenced to death were granted presidential amnesty and given life imprisonment instead of their death sentences.
A spokesman for the Prisons department said there were about 450 prisoners sentenced to death and considering the pleas by them to mitigate their punishments, the committee appointed to consider it had interviewed about 300 prisoners and selected 34 to grant presidential amnesty and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
They were selected after considering their rehabilitation process, he said.
