UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake today asked how the Government hoped to stop youth unrest by allowing drug trafficking and promoting gambling in the country.
“The President had recently said that the Government was going to erase the word ‘Youth Unrest’ from the dictionary. But what steps has it taken to do so? There was a significant rise in gambling and the consumption of liquor in 2013. Sri Lanka holds the record for the highest consumption of liquor in the world. Liquor consumption has increased by 20 million litres last year. It increased from 65 million litres in 2012 to 85 million litres last year. Is this the ‘mathata thitha’ concept highlighted in Mahinda Chinthana,” he asked.
Mr. Attanayake said Sri Lanka would soon become a drug distribution centre not only in Asia but in the world as well.
“Sri Lanka appears to have based its economy on liquor and drugs. We have become a main drug distribution centre in Asia and will soon become a worldwide drug distribution centre. This is a black mark on the country,” he said.
Mr. Attanayake said new narcotic known as ‘Khat’ was brought into the country from Kenya after Sri Lankan delegates visited Kenya recently. (Ajith Siriwardana & Yohan perera)
