SL relaxes laws for TN fishermen

The Sri Lankan government has relaxed its restrictions and granted permission for Tamil Nadu fishermen to visit the Katchathivu Island on March 19 and 20 to participate in the St. Anthony’s festival held in the island.

Sri Lanka Navy spokesperson Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya told Daily Mirror that the laws have been relaxed for them to enter the Sri Lankan waters and visit the Katchathivu island solely for the purpose of participating in the religious festival. “The laws regarding fishing in Sri Lankan waters remain the same and it is prohibited. They are only permitted to visit the island to partake in the festival activities,” he added.

It is reported that a large number of fishermen and their families from TN, particularly the Rameshwaram district take a four hour boat ride across the Palk Strait and visit the Katchathivu island annually to participate in the festival. Although a large number of Sri Lankan fishermen had also participated in the festival, the numbers had gradually decreased as a result of the war since 1983. Since then no Sri Lankan fishermen had visited the island for the ceremony until last year. (Lakna Paranamanna)
