The free and fair election held on Monday had sent a clear message to the world that Sri Lanka too can hold elections in a peaceful manner, Police Chief N.K. Illangakoon said today.
He requested the people to maintain the peaceful atmosphere even during the post-election period and uphold the reputation of being able to hold a free and fair election.
“We were able to hold a peaceful election because the police functioned in an impartial manner and acted promptly to quell election law violations whenever and wherever they happened. This year’s general election could be considered as one of the most peaceful elections held in Sri Lanka since 2012,” he told a news conference held at the Police Headquarters.
The Police Chief said unlike at previous elections, the police had carried out frequent raids to arrest those who had violated election laws without waiting till a complaint was made.
He said the voters, poll observers and the media had set the stage for the conduct of a free and fair election. (Darshana Sanjeewa)
