The sorry performance of the so called cheerleaders at the ICC World T20 is not only a disgraceful eyesore but has showcased Sri Lanka in a poor light to the entire world judging by the disparaging comments they have drawn from the international media.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is furious at the way the country has been made the laughing stock of the world but feel helpless as it was the International Cricket Council (ICC) and its local directorate which had put Sri Lanka in this embarrassing position.“We played no part in it. What has happened is that the ICC had given the contract of supplying these cheerleaders to a private company which in turn hired a local company to provide the dancers.
Unfortunately neither the ICC nor that private company consulted us on the matter. It is obvious that SLC was in the best position to recommend the best local company for such a job. This mistake has resulted in projecting a bad image of the country to the world” said SLC Secretary Nishantha Ranatunga.
Ranatunga felt that the Sri Lankan ICC World T20 secretariat which is run by Sri Lankan officials had also bungled when they failed to consult the SLC on the matter.
ICC World T20 Director Upekha Abeykoon Nell did not answer her phone and did not respond even to an SMS from “Daily Mirror” quite in contrast to 2011 ICC World Cup Director Suraj Dandeniya who promptly responded to all difficult issues and was available to media at all times despite constantly getting flak in the newspapers.
It has now emerged that Sri Lanka’s embarrassment has been caused by ICC stinginess and that the world cricket governing body had not spent enough money on the project. Obviously an embarrassment to Sri Lanka is of no concern to the ICC as long as they save a few bucks.
The man in charge of the dancers, Sudev Abeysekara, who himself is not too happy with the show had told the Indian newspaper Hindustan Times that the poor quality of the performance is directly linked to the poor payments. "The dance steps being performed are fine. But the thing is that in an event like this you need good looking girls, and to get the beautiful girls who are professional dancers, you have to pay more. The payment is not that great," he told HT.
Abeysekara had also told the newspaper that he received the contract late and girls did not have enough time to practice. "You need three-four months of practice, I have got 7-8 days to train the girls," he said.
Abeysekara had also exposed the cheap stunts of the ICC revealing that the podiums on which the dancers are performing are not up to the mark. One of them had crashed down during the opening day of Super Eights according to the newspaper.
Abeysekara had also blamed the poor quality dresses that had been supplied to the dancers. "The style and fashion is okay, but the quality of the dresses is poor. The girls are not comfortable, the tights they are wearing stipped down while dancing and the girls were busy tying them here and there. Most of our dancers will not wear shorts for an event like this because they are conscious that parents are watching" he told the newspaper.
The Hindustan Times which mocked the whole issue in an article titled “Cheerleaders? More like cats on a hot tin roof” said “The cheerleaders have proved to be huge crowd-pullers and have usually been found too hot to handle in all the editions of the ICC World Twenty20, from the South African beauties in 2007 to the Caribbean bomb-shells in 2010”
“Sri Lanka is a country where people know how to party. They can turn matches into one huge festival with non-stop music and dancing. Celebration and tourism is ingrained in their daily life. So, it is really surprising that their cheergirls are producing the blandest of shows. No wonder, even the TV cameras rarely pan in their direction”.
The article also quite rightly observed “It looks like a case of missed opportunity to draw wider attention to Sri Lanka's rich culture”. (Channaka de Silva)

Sudev Abeysekara needs to get his head examined, if he thinks he a can pass the buck so easy. How dare he call the girls not good looking in public? He should have his contact terminated. The dance steps are NOT OK, the costumes are NOT OK. You can't blame the girls, they are not professional dancers, obviously the people in charge have pocketed most of the funds.

Somebody along the line has made some mega bucks on this whole issue much to Lanka's embarrassment.Somebody says that cheerleaders should be beautiful. Our girls aren't stunners but they are pure native, only the costume that made them look bad. Who were the organizers trying to impress, the JHU? I feel so sorry for the girls.

If I was organising, I would have used volunteers from schools instead. Dance students could showcase their talents and secure future contracts with dance troupes across the country if they put on a good show.
Look at the Olympic games! NONE of the performers were paid! They did it for their own experience and exposure so they could put it on their CV that they have danced at such a prestigious event!!
Sri Lanka has a golden opportunity to really make an impact with this event. Little things like this make outsiders believe we're still a developing nation that can't be trusted to look into detail

This article itself and most of the comments (of those people quoted in the article and those who have responded to the article) are in such poor taste. The complaint is that the girls are bad looking but there is more to it, reading between the lines, that is, they did not show enough. All these people want to use girls as sex objects.

What a funny reply..."Most of our dancers will not wear shorts for an event like this because they are conscious that parents are watching" he told the newspaper." Entire world is watching, parents agreed to dance. but complaining on dress. Before the dress, age is the problem. they look 40+. and their body is not supporting to what they suppose to do. probably organizer got millions and hired people who are not a real Cheerleaders so they can pay a less and make good profit and run away with the big sum.

What a comment made by him: "Abeysekara had also told the newspaper that he received the contract late and girls did not have enough time to practice. "You need three-four months of practice, I have got 7-8 days to train the girls," he said." you don't need to train Cheerleaders if there are really Cheerleaders. You need to train, when they are not in the same field. obviously hired ordinary people to pay less. If you train for months, you need to pay them for 3-4 months. so you hired for a week. again good margin was an intention.

The idea of having "cheer" leaders is to bring pleasant cheers to the spectators but unfortunately, these girls bring "tears" to the eyes when one thinks of the missed opportunity to showcase the real beauty and talent of Sri Lanka to the whole world. We do have plenty of both for sure.

Please don't blame the girls for their performance. Their dance steps and choreography may not be excellent, but is more than acceptable. The costumes are plain stupid, but then don't blame them for it. At least they have done their best in trying circumstances, maintained their diginity, and not tarnished the hallowed cultural image of Sri Lanka. Also don'y blame them for a half hearted and sorry attempt to ape the western world.

I agree with some of the comments, what happened to our pride? We are world famous for our kandyan dancing, what about our traditional drummers?. This was a great opportunity to show case to the world our culture and heritage. There some VDO clips being played at the venue as well as on the TV, but what more opportunity than the cheering stages. I don’t agree that we should blame the girls; they are just doing what they are told to do. Also I am sure that reliance might be jumping down the throats of the parties responsible as it looks bad on their brand as well.

In the absence of long limbed lasses with the vital statistics, instead of trying to ape other countries, we should have used 3 performing elephants from the Dehiwela Zoo.
Each time a 6 or 4 was hit or a wicket fell, the animals could have trumpeted, played the symbols or stood on their heads,
This would have provided some quality eye-catching action that would have been unique to Sri Lanka.
What's happening now is a disgrace!!
