The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) revealed that the 3G mobile broadband speeds advertised by the service providers are significantly lower than the actual speeds received by end users.
TRCSL Director General Anusha Palpita told Daily Mirror Online that they have planned to conduct speed tests and technical assessments on all HSPA service to evaluate the actual speeds received by the end users, the coming week. “Once we receive the actual figures, we will be instructing the service providers to advertise the actual speeds instead of speculative figures so that the end users are not deceived,” he added.
Mr. Palpita stated that the commonly advertised speed of 3.5 G is merely a figure used for marketing benefits and the speed in reality depends on several factors including the tower’s bandwidth, type of device used by the end user as well as the distance to the tower. (Lakna Paranamanna)
