Thiruvananthapuram: Sri Lanka Saturday said it hoped India will vote for it in the upcoming UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva.
India had voted for a US-sponsored resolution last year that pulled up Colombo on issues related to human rights and the re-settlement of Tamils displaced by the military conflict.
Sri Lankan Minister for Public Administration W.D.J. Seneviratne told reporters here that there had been "a remarkable improvement in the human rights situation" in his country.
"We expect India will consider (the issue) differently," he said.
"Today citizens in (the northern and eastern) provinces can freely approach the civil administration to sort out their issues," he said, referring to the former war zone.
The minister said bonds between India and Sri Lanka were growing from strength to strength.
"India is one of the major exporters to Sri Lanka and in the last year trade between the two countries crossed $5 million. Besides, India is helping to build a power plant in our country," he said.
He said Sri Lanka and Kerala had a lot of similarities in culture and food.
The minister spoke hours after Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa ended a two-day pilgrimage tour of India. (IANS)

SL is hiding many wrong doings and displaying cheap politics. At least certain sections of Indian leaning /improving their quality seeing Russell Peter. Means Russell Peter contributing in some way without hiding / doing cheap things.

The trouble with this country is that there are too many politicians who believe, with a conviction based on experience, that you can fool all of the people in this country all of the time but sadly applying this to the international community!

What has the government done to address the specific concerns raised by India and the International community regarding human rights violations, to expect support from India? Simply stating that the human rights situation has improved, according to the government's view won't do.

Guys Guys....UN vote or not, dont forget that India is responsible for the terror problem in SL. They did that to prevent SL becoming a singapore. So dont count on thier vote and for god sake isolate them from our Island. They have been and will be always looking to back stab and ruin SL. They successfully ruined our criket team and will do anything to ruin any other development in SL. When will you guys ever learn that India is not GENUINE in her dealings?

Remember the effect the travel ban had on TN? They came to their senses pretty quickly then because they realized what they were missing. Jayalalitha is still silent after that shock. So don't treat us as insignificant because India does care about trade with SL.

Human rights????Lets be realistic...isn't this out of proportion??/Honestly, here and there I hear isolated cases but is there a real BIG HR issue in our country or it is like a 'manthra' that pro-LTTE propagandists and NGOs are feeding into everybody's mouth in and out of Sri Lanka??Open your eyes and see the real ground situiation and compare with other countries like India, Pakistan etc.

Our Government is giving out most of the large projects not to India.
Increased taxes on cars (Specially to reduce Indian import), motorcycles, and Autos. Every body knows it.
Now you say that they will vote for you.
Let's see.

Just big talk only - the same way one Minister said in the Parliament that Rizana will be freed soon, even after she had been beheaded in Saudi Arabia. Perhaps the Minister whose own electorate is full of foul muders like in Kahawatte carried out by his on associates, does not know what "human rights" are.

You can't beg for it. You need to earn it. And as Sri Lankans we know that we are working hard to earn it. But India alone will not oppose any resolution or proposal that US/UN come up with. They will always back them in order to maintain their stability. If we can't earn it from India, the best thing is to isolate them and start working on others, because India is not the only country to vote against us.
