Sri Lanka ranked 29 in the list of the most failed states ", the prestigious Foreign Policy magazine said in its latest annual ranking.
Sri Lanka ranked high in the Factionalized Elite criteria scoring 9.5 while Group Grievances scored 9.4.
Sri Lanka’s neighboring countries such as Pakistan is at number 12, Myanmar is at 18, Bangladesh (25); Nepal (27), and Bhutan is at 50 in a list of 60 countries in which African countries dominate.
On Sri Lanka, it said, "The government's final push against the rebels relied on the shelling of civilians and other atrocities, according to a 2010 report by the International Crisis Group.
"The most recent statistics from last year indicate that some 327,000 are still displaced from the conflict."
"Despite the pronounced fractures still lingering, the Sinhalese-dominated government in Colombo seems eager to forget the past," it added.
Other countries in the top 10 are Chad, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan Central African Republic and Iraq. (Sources: The Economic Times)

It failed in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Now it is facing the same fate in Libiya too.
It owe billions of dollars to China.

The reasons given are hardly valid to make a failed state. Tourism has increased by 600%. Literacy level is very high. No bombs for more than 02yrs. People are free. Religious freedom is ample comparing with neighbors & gulf. Despite COL people are happy. Free education n medical in govt hospitals. Defeated terrorism. Problems we have are common all over the world. This is a highly bias report & will not affect SL at all. The defeat of terrorism has angered the west.

Over 300,000 hostages taken by the Tamil Tiger Terrorists were rescued by the SriLankan Govt and resettled after demining their residential areas. How can this be called a failed state? Economy is progressing rapidly, much faster than any of the Western Nations or any other nation except China - so how can this be a failed state? If this grading can be so inaccurate, it is possible the rest of gradings given to other nations are also utterly wrong and is merely the wishful thinking of powers behind this Foreign Policy Magazine.

Actually...the lower ranking means that the country improved....29th means that SL got better. But still....It's a tragedy that SL is still in the top 60 list after the war. Why don'y you people even don't bother to find out what failed state index really is.?Why are you just making fun out of our own country at the drop of a hat? Sri lanka ranks high partly because of social indicators given below
Demographic pressures,Massive movement of refugees and internally displaced peoples, Legacy of vengeance-seeking group grievance, Chronic and sustained human flight
Do you see that freedom of movement ( fear of bombs etc.) is not factored in ?
our low scores are to a larger extent due to the fact that INGO data is considered as accurate in preparing these

Most comments here are based on party politics (like everything else in SL). Those who support Rajapakse regime say the index is rubbish and those who are against the regime say the index is right.
We need to look at the stituation in perspective. A country's development and sanity are not measured by the number of BMWs, Jaguars and Prados on roads. It is measured by the level of democratic process in the country, maintenance of law and order and acceptable function of systems/institutional mechanisms of the country.
Based on these things one can make a judgement on SL and where the country falls in the world ranking.

Sri lanka has failed as a result of it's people. Out of the 80% Sinhalese there's about 5% with brains. Out of the 12% Tamils there's about 95% with brains of which, most were forced to leave the country in 1983. In the other 8% there's about 90% who are Muslims and who are running the economy. The parliament has no power. Executive President is more powerful than any other post on this earth.
All the necessary criterion for another Zimbabwe is there at present and before another three years laps there will be a Rs. 10,000 note available.
