Sunday Leader Journalist Faraz Shaukatally was shot by an unidentified group last night, a reporter said. He was admitted to the Kalubowila hospital.
The injured journalist was thereafter transferred to the Colombo National Hospital where he is to undergo surgery.
Initial inquiries have revealed that three men on two motorbikes had opened fire at Shaukatally in front of a guest house in which he was residing.
Reports said the journalist had been on the phone with a colleague when the line was abruptly disconnected around midnight. Minutes later the Sunday Leader had been alerted about the shooting.
Earlier, Shaukatally was reported to have told his colleagues that a group of individuals had visited his residence and inquired of his whereabouts from residents of the area.

I didn't agree with everything Shauketally says but he deserves respect as a journalist. In the final analysis, we have only the journalists to fight our corner if this country becomes authoritative. There is very little chance the shooters would be caught because our crime fighters are not equipped to catch them. We have no CCTV cameras, no DNA profiling, no incentive, and most importantly no encouragements to the honest policeman in a demoralised police force

I strongly oppose the Graphics in the news item. Hurting a mediperson is NOT a crime in Sri Lanka. When was the last time anyone was punished for attacking a media person in Sri Lanka? We can start from Richard de Zoysa through Nimalarajan, Taraki, Relanki Selvarajah, Kuganathan, Lasantha, Prageeth (to name a very few) and this one.
