Jail for biting cop’s finger



An army deserter who was accused of biting off a police officer’s finger and obstructing him from carrying out his duties at the Fort railway station was sentenced to a three-month imprisonment by the Colombo Fort Magistrate today.

The Fort police charged that the accused Chaminda Chandra Kumara of Payagala had been behaving in an aggressive manner under the influence of alcohol at the Fort Railway Station. Following his unruly behaviour, the concerned police officer had attempted to control the accused. 

At that time, the army deserter had bitten off the police officer’s finger and the police officer who was injured in the incident was admitted to the hospital.

When the case pertaining to the matter came up before Magistrate Ms. Lanka Jayaratne, the accused pleaded guilty to all charges and the Magistrate sentenced him to three months imprisonment since he was having previous criminal records. The Magistrate further imposed a fine of Rs.1500 on the accused. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
