Two youths killed in train tragedy

Two youths were killed after they struck the Mee Oya Bridge between Ambanpola and Galgamuwa while travelling on the train this afternoon, police said.

They said the youth had been travelling on the footboard and fallen into the Mee Oya after they struck on the bridge.

They were admitted to the Galgamuwa Hospital but pronounced dead on admission.

TRILL KILLS. I have seen there youth, both local and foreign on footboards for no reason. Sad, life is lost. Sorry but they deserve it.

Repeated announcements are made at the Fort Railway station against footboard travelling on trains. But the announcers must be taught on clarity of the messages they deliver.

High time trains doors are closed and opened at stations only when the train has stopped. Automated mechanism would be difficult to apply, but a system where the head guard of the train could open and close all doors with the press of a button would be ideal.
