Unlawful food handling

Most of the eating houses and hotels in the Colombo municipal area continuously violate the Food Act by not employing qualified food handlers, Chief Medical Officer Pradeep Kariyawasam said a while ago. He made this remark while addressing a function organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (YP)

Have you people seen places where you can find more flies inside the food cabinet than out side? Yes there are so many. But Sri Lankans living in europe don't have to make this an issue not visit to their Motherland.

I suggest that authority should not be given to anybody to open small eating houses,the cooks and stewards are so dirty looking, filthy fingernails, you even get cigarette buts in the rice packet and instead of a piece of fish or chicken u get only the bone put on purpose and wrapped by the filthy man who is packing up the lunch packet. Why can't these type of things be looked into?

Which is why I said previously, 'Education from top to bottom.' What good, for example, all of the adverts for toothpaste and toothbrushes if the food that people are putting into their mouths comes from dirty cooking areas and dirty hands? BUT, most of us who care to make comments here probably agree: hygiene is important and the average poor person is compelled to think first of where just to get the food.

Conditions in most average eating places in Sri Lanka needs to be improved by proper training, such as the washing hands frequently or wearing disposable plastic gloves (as done in Western countries), when handling food. The fly menace should be eradicated in and around places where food is sold or eaten.
Its always nice to see a food server in clean while clothing, hair kept short and neat, if a cook a cap covering the hair.

Poor people who eat from these street hotels also can get sick. It would seem that the attitude you have taken is the typical rationalization for not doing anything to improve a situation. What's wrong with using a little soap, water, chlorine or whatever to keep the cooking and serving areas clean? And yes, I have seen scads of flies everywhere, which is one of the reasons I refuse to eat any form of dried fish.

Yes, why sri lankans coming on holidays to mother land should eat from these so called hotels on street. After all , they come to enjoy sri lankan foods. so, why can't they ask their relatives to cook and eat cleanly without chasing behind these small boutiques?

people think their hands are the cleanest tools, while in reality they are the dirtiest part of human body...

I know one small eating house next to my office at Colpetty, where the waiter always dig his nose and serve food bare handed. But all of us go there coz we can sit in the back yard and smoke while having a plain tea.

I agree with you all from the point of your view as clean and hygienic food. On the hoteliers side, They have to sped more money on weekly basis for CMC public health inspector, providing fee meals to Police, giving huge sum for CMC garbage collector and addition to these all pay huge sum as "Huppam" (Ransom) to under figure (which cannot be revealed openly by the hoteliers. These are in addition to government taxes, CMC charges, Extra Ordinary charges for Water and Electricity.How can they employ more workers to handle cleaning, serving seperate person. This will hamper their profit.

These food houses or hotels should have accredited food handlers, proper documentations should be provided so that authorities could audit these documents periodicaly.
Training and education is the most important tool in this process.

This is one of the main reasons that I have no intention of travelling to my motherland for a visit. There are no improvements, no quality of life - Just a THIRD WORLD country with a low class living unless you are so rich and courrpt........
